LeRoy A. Benfield
LeRoy A. Benfield, of Perkasie, PA, died Tuesday, May 21, 2013, in Doylestown Hospital, Doylestown Twp., PA. He was 90. He was the loving husband of Joyce M. (Bergstresser) Benfield. The couple had celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary on February 26, 2013. Born in Perkasie, he was the son of the late Claude E. and Mary (Reinert) Benfield. A 1940 graduate of Sell-Perk High School, Perkasie, he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II as a PT Boat Torpedoman and 50 caliber gunner. He received a commendation from the Flotilla Commander for outstanding service for such a successful battle action- most enemy barges sunk in a single attack. While in high school and following his service in the Navy, he worked in the family business, the former C. E. Benfield Co., Inc., a feed and flour mill the Benfield Family purchased in 1919. He, along with his older brother, Harold, operated the business, where he served as Vice President until retiring there in 1978. Concurrently, he was employed by Triangle Publications of Philadelphia, PA, for 10 years. Following his retirement from the mill, he worked for the former American Olean Tile Co., Lansdale, and later as a physical therapy aide at Holy Redeemer Hospital, Huntingdon Valley, PA, for 20 years until retiring at age 85. He was a member of Calvary Church of Souderton, Souderton, PA. During the 1970s, he served on the Board of Directors of the Perkasie Borough Authority. An avid pet lover, he also enjoyed gardening as well as vacationing and spending time with his family. Survivors: Surviving with his wife; are four sons, Brent E. Benfield and his wife, Ruth Ann, of Hilltown, PA, Barry Benfield and his wife, Nancy, of Bedminster Twp., PA, and Bruce Benfield and his wife, Ann, and Craig W. Benfield, all of Richland Twp.; two daughters, Linda J. Benfield-Grass and her significant other, John, of Elkins Park and Perkasie, PA, and Lisa Adelman and her husband, Steve, of Doylestown, PA; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Myers of Sellersville, PA. He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Benfield, in 1991; his brother, Harold Benfield; his sisters, Marian Barndt and Florence Fretz; and a sister in infancy. Services: His funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at 11 a.m., in Calvary Church of Souderton, 820 Route 113, Souderton, where family and friends may call from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Interment will follow in Huffs Church Union Cemetery, Barto, PA.
