Joyce Shive Obituary
Joyce Elizabeth Shive
Joyce Elizabeth Shive, 88, of Allentown died peacefully on July 17, 2013 at St. Lukes Hospice. She was the widow of the late Leon John Shive. Born in Salisbury Township, she was the daughter of the late Morris E. Eck and Susie (Krauss) Heady. Joyce graduated from Fountain Hill High School and worked in her early years at various textile mills in Allentown. She later worked at Salisbury High School as a cook and eventually as the head cook. Joyce was a lifelong member of St. Marks U.C.C. Church where she taught Sunday school years ago and was an active participant in the annual church bazaar. Joyce would have said her greatest legacy was her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, but others might say it was her extensive collection of recipes and her amazing cooking skills. Starting her baking before the crack of dawn, she made, from scratch, pies, cookies and Dobostorte 10 layer cakes, which were the icing on every holiday table and many ordinary days alike. She simply loved to feed others, and would never take no for an answer when food was offered. Joyces creative side extended well beyond her kitchen to other dimensions of her life. What often appeared to be more work than fun, Joyce was dedicated to having the best yard in the neighborhood. She also had a great talent for needlepoint and crewel embroidery. She always found a theme that reflected the personality and interests of the recipient and like all great art, was able to transport the viewer to another place and inspire their imagination. Joyce enjoyed the serenity of her front porch. She loved to sit on the porch of the house, in which she was born, and spent hours chatting with family and neighbors, while watching her flowers bloom (or not bloom) and the birds come and go as the seasons passed. Just as much the heart of her home as was her kitchen, her porch holds a lifetime of memories for those lucky enough to have spent a lazy afternoon or two by her side. Joyce was a great shopping buddy, always on the hunt for a good bargain. Christmas was her favorite holiday, where she enjoyed decorating and adding to her ornament collection each year. For the members of her family and friends alike, she will be greatly missed and never forgotten. Survivors: Joyce is survived by her two daughters, Sharmaine Cady of Saylorsburg and Valerie Harlow, wife of William Harlow, of Allentown; her surviving sister, Gladys Schantz of Walnutport; as well as her six grandchildren, Jason Harlow (wife, Nicole), Kristi Kitchen (husband, Matthew), Kerri Harlow (husband, Christopher), Nathan Cady, Mindy Cady, and Dana Cady; her seven great-grandchildren, Jared Harlow, Emma Harlow, Paige Harlow, Jack Kitchen, Ben Kitchen, Sam Kitchen, and Sebastian Smith, plus twins on the way from Kerri Harlow. Services: Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, July 23, at 10 a.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1500 Airport Road, Allentown. Arrangements are being handled by K.V. Knopp Funeral Home, Inc., Allentown. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the organ fund of St. Marks U.C.C. Church, 52 E. Susquehanna St., Allentown, PA 18103, or to St. Lukes Hospice, 801 Ostrum Street, Bethlehem, PA 18015.
