Joseph George Obituary

Joseph Hambly George
Joseph Hambly Joe George of Moore Township, passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2013, in his home surrounded by his family. He was 95 years old. Born in Weaversville, he was the loving husband of the late Ethel (Heberling) George and the son of the late Joseph and Mamie (Edelman) George. He was the proud father of three daughters and a very active life-long member of Chapman Quarries United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of World War II, having proudly served in the Navy aboard LST 268. He was retired from Bethlehem Steel in 1979. Joe took full advantage of his retirement years. He was an authority on the local slate industry and rarely missed an opportunity to share his knowledge and to display the beautiful works of art he created out of slate. He was an avid collector of Eastern Pennsylvania Indian artifacts and was the owner of an extensive collection. Joe enjoyed playing bridge and especially looked forward to playing golf with friends. Nothing, however, was more important to him than making memories with his family. Survivors: Joe is survived by three daughters, Ann, Sarah, and Laura; a sister, Lily; as well as one granddaughter and two great-granddaughters. Services: A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 06, 2013 at 10 a.m. in the Chapman Quarries United Methodist Church, 1433 Main Street, Bath, PA 18014. A private burial at Green Mount Cemetery in Bath will precede the service. Funeral arrangements are by the George G. Bensing Funeral Home, Inc., Moorestown - Bath. Contributions: Memorial contributions may be made to Chapman Quarries United Methodist Church or St. Lukes Hospice, 1510 Valley Center Parkway, Suite 200, Bethlehem, PA 18017.

I have known Joe George since I was a small child. He was a very interesting person and I always enjoyed talking to him. I have some slate pieces he made and treasure each of them. I learned a lot from him in the short class on creating decorative slate pieces he led a number of years ago. I have a square for a slate checkerboard I got years ago. I really need to find time to create it! I am sorry I haven't seen him in a while. He was a strong Christian: knew his Bible well and I am sure he will be much missed by everyone who spent time with him.

Joe was a very good friend and like a father to me. At a drop of a hat he would read scripture from the bible and give prayer for valentine's day breakfast. I cherish the checker board and other beautiful slate art he has done for me. Barb and I are going to miss your warm welcome and smiling face at church. You and Ethel raised a God loving family. I'm going to miss you buddy. LOVE YA.
