Vivian W. Butts
Vivian Williams Butts, 80, of Bethlehem, died Sunday, October 6, 2013. Born October 5, 1933 in Fentress, VA, she is the daughter of the late Wendell Curtis Williams and the late Catherine Lily Spruill Williams. Vivian joined the Bethlehem Police Department in 1964, becoming the citys first female officer. Promoted to sergeant in 1980, she retired in 1989 after 25 years of service. Preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Earl Butts Sr. Survivors: Son, Raymond (Teresa) Earl Butts Jr. of Accokeek, MD; daughter, Sharon R. King of Fresh Meadows, NY; granddaughters, Erica Jones of Raleigh, NC, Shanel Butts of Oxon Hill, MD, Briana Butts of Accokeek; grandson, Derek Carlos King Jr., Fresh Meadows; adopted son Karl (Deborah) Lyons of East Stroudsburg, PA; brothers, Elmer (Antonia), and Wayman (Annie) Williams of Bethlehem, Edward (Linda Knabb), and Donald Williams of Allentown; brothers-in-law, Martin L. Butts, Jr. and John Butts, of Elizabeth City, NC; sisters-in-law, Clara (Roland) Williams of Bethlehem; Esther (James) Parker, Mary Ellis, Martha and Katie Butts, of Elizabeth City, Susie Brooks of Brooklyn, NY, and Lillian (Clyburn) Cunningham of Severn, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Vivian was preceded in death by sisters, Doris and Hazel, and brothers, Merlin and Roland. The family would like to express their gratitude for the care and compassion provided by the staff of St. Lukes Hospice and those who cared for her at home. Services: Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m., Friday (remarks 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.), and 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, St. Paul Baptist Church, 925 E. Geopp St., Bethlehem. Services: 11 a.m., Saturday at the church. Contributions: Those planning expressions of sympathy are asked to consider a donation to their favorite charity or St. Lukes Hospice, Attn: Development Office, 801 Ostrum St., Bethlehem, 18015.
