Robert A. Allwein Obituary
Allwein, Robert A.Robert A. (Bob) Allwein, 92, of Allentown returned to the Lord Monday, June 9, from Cedarbrook Allentown where he had been a resident. Bob was the loving husband of Betty F. Allwein for 50 years, who preceded him in death in 2013. He was also preceded by his wife Margaret (Kane) Allwein in 1960. Born in Lebanon, PA to the late Paul A. and Annie (Shay) Allwein, Bob was the middle child of 11. He graduated from Lebanon Catholic High School in 1939. As a boy Bob was active in Boy Scouts of America, becoming an Eagle Scout. He was also a lifeguard and water safety instructor prior to joining the armed service. Bob proudly served his country in the 14th Armored Division during WW II as a Tank Commander. He saw service in the African Middle Eastern Campaign, France and Germany. Bob was awarded a Purple Heart and Purple Heart with Oak Leaf for his services to America. Upon his discharge Bob attended Villanova University and received his BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1949. Bob's career spanned more than 40 years working for: Harvester-New Holland, National US Radiator, Crane Company and GATX Fuller Corporation where he managed the Catasauqua Plant until 1984. In his spare time he served as a Scout Master, President of both the Catasauqua Chamber of Commerce and Serra Club of Allentown. Upon retirement Bob devoted himself to his church, St. Thomas More Parish of Allentown, the choir and Men's Bible Study group, and many of the Diocese ministries including Cursillo Movement. He volunteered to Catholic Charities who honored him in 2012 for many years of selfless service. He served as Eucharistic Minister to Lehigh Valley Hospital for more than 20 years. Bob was very active in the Pro-Life Movement. Throughout his life Bob was proud of his Catholic Faith and lived it. Survivors: Sons Robert P. and Wife Karen of Bethlehem, Thomas M. of Washington DC, Daughter Helen E wife of Rick Tiene of Alexandria VA. Bob is also survived by Grandchildren Michele R McCann, Lisa A Diehl, Charlie and Jack Tiene, and three great grandchildren: Reese and Reilly McCann, and Mason Diehl, a sister Claire Barbini of Norfolk VA, as well as dozens of nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his brothers: Herm, Bud, Jim, Joe, Paul, and Pierce, and sisters: Sister Helen Allwein SSJ, Sister Ann Louise Allwein SAPB, and Mary Sattazahn. Services: Services are under the direction of Weber Funeral Homes of Allentown, A viewing will be held Friday, June 13 from 11:30am-12:30pm at Weber Funeral Home, 1619 W. Hamilton St. Allentown, followed by A Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00pm at St. Thomas More Church, 1040 Flexer Ave. Allentown. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Lebanon PA following a visitation and Mass on Saturday June 21 at St. Mary's Assumption B.V.M. Church in Lebanon. Contributions: In Lieu of flowers the Family asks that contributions be made to Catholic Charities or to Special Olympics.
