Hiya, Pop, Here´s a memory of you and me. You, working on grading some papers. Me, about 8 years old, walking up to where you were working and standing silently watching until you noticed me. Then I asked, "Papa, would you tell me a story of when you were a kid?" And then I would sit and listen.

Pop, it's been 7 years since you left. Since then, I've published my first book and I'm near completion on a second one. You would be so proud, because I treasured teaching like you did, so much so that I'm writing about it now. Also, we've been trying to keep your memories alive. Every once in awhile one of the children does something that reminds me of you and I will tell a story to them. You, slicing the watermelon into five big chunks with that big knife, and we each ate a "bowl" of watermelon. Same with ice cream. The hikes on the Appalachian trail. You always brought dark chocolate and peanut butter, and you wore that handkerchief on your head to keep the sun off. Plaid shirt and plaid shorts, that was your uniform. So many times, I just miss you, your smile, your laughter, your humor. You sure could make me laugh! Also, when I was teaching my own college students, you had such good advice. I miss you. Give mum a hug for me, will you? Also Volodya, for Tyotya Fanya? And Igor and Lydia. Lots of love, yours forever Nadya.

Sorry to hear of Alex's passing. I knew him along with his wife through Meals On Wheels. I miss his smiling face and bringing him the WSJ. Wednesday's will never be the same. Thinking of Irene and Nadine at this difficult time.
Sincerely Nannette Pronchik

My/our sincere condolences on your loss to all members of your family, and, in particular, to Alex, who my wife Marie worked with at PP&L for several years. Personally, I fondly remember studying his course Advanced Strength of Materials at Lehigh University in 1962. Prof. Ostapenko impressed me so much with his command of the subject. I will always appreciate how he encouraged me to continue with my studies in graduate school at Lehigh, and suspect that he had a hand in helping me attain a position as a graduate teaching assistant. Besides studying his course in Advanced Structural Analysis in graduate school, he was my Faculty Adviser for my thesis. He always treated me with respect of my knowledge and capabilities, although his were so much greater, and as a teaching colleague. He was always a friendly, mild-mannered gentleman, but firmly expected the best from his students. He was very knowledgeable in his area of expertise and could convey that knowledge to his students, in and out of the classroom. I recall those days being associated with him with much pleasure.

Dr. Ostapenko had a profound influence on me, always being ready to answer a question or discuss a technical issue. He was never too busy to stop what he was doing to talk with students. He had a unique way of presenting difficult material and I try and use similar techniques and methods in the classroom. He will be missed.

Thank you to the family for sharing such an able teacher with the Lehigh University structural engineers.
