Charles Richard Silva, 70 of Atwater passed away on Friday, September 6 at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House with his family at his side after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
He lived his entire life in Atwater on his parents, Joe and Josie Silva's Ranch. He leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Jacqueline Sue, his sons; Johnny and Jeffrey (Maggie), his grandchildren; Ryan, Cody and Emma Sue, his brother, Larry Silva and sister, Dianne (Mike) Silva and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister-in-law, Rosemary Silva.
Chuck attended McSwain Elementary School, Atwater High and Our Lady of Mercy Elementary and High School. Upon graduation, he became a firefighter for the Division of Forestry during the summer and drove school bus for McSwain School the rest of the year. He then went to work for Merced County Fire Department and was one of the first firemen to open the Santa Nella Fire Station. Chuck moved on to work for the Atwater School District driving a school bus and working as a Reserve Officer for the Atwater Police Department and Sheriff's Department. In 1969, he joined the Merced County Sheriff's Department full time and completed his career with 24 years as a Correctional Officer.
Chuck took pride in everything he did. He was meticulous about washing, polishing and mechanically maintaining his vehicles; his yard was immaculately maintained. His hobbies included camping, hunting, fishing and driving his boat. Chuck also was an avid Citizen Band radio operator. He was a member of YMI Council #80 and Merced Elk Lodge #1240.
Friends and family are invited to the visitation on Thursday, September 12, 2013 from 5-6:30 PM at Wilson Family Funeral Chapel of Atwater with Rosary at 7PM at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Atwater. Mass will be Friday, September 13, 2013 at 10 AM at St. Anthony Catholic Church with burial to follow at Merced District Cemetery. Donations may be made to favorite charity.
