Saunders, John Herbert - San Jose
John Herbert Saunders passed away at his home in Sacramento, California on November 5, 2014 from pancreatic cancer. He was born in Merced, CA on January 2, 1954 to John Saunders and Patricia Woodruff Saunders. John was preceded in death by his mother. He is survived by his father, John Saunders (Perth, Australia), his sisters Mimi Saunders (Encino, CA) and Ramona Saunders (Carmichael, CA), his aunts, Frances Saunders (Merced, CA), Rosemary Woodruff (Saratoga, CA) and cousins Toni Cabral (Don, Manteca, CA), Tom Woodruff (Saratoga, CA) and Robert Woodruff (Los Gatos, CA). He also leaves behind many lifelong friends he made at school, work and everyday life. John grew up on the family ranch in Merced County. Fixing up old cars and tractors, he was fascinated by all things mechanical. John attended Mc Swain Elementary and graduated from Merced High School in 1972. While attending Merced JC he acquired an FCC license and proudly worked on-air at a local radio station. He then went on to Cal Poly Pomona where he received a BSEE in Electronic Engineering and Computer Sciences. In his professional career, John worked as an electronics engineer at various leading companies including Oxford International, Aero Jet (where he was nominated for Engineer of the Year), Hewlett Packard and Abbott Labs. He also taught electronics and math full time at Chaffey High School in Southern California. John had a lifelong love of music and started his own business designing bass guitars out of his garage in Upland, CA. He later became a consulting engineer for Tobias Guitars. He enjoyed playing bass guitar with various bands and could be heard many weekends on stage at clubs throughout California. He also had a passion for cooking and loved Asian cuisine. He taught himself to speak Mandarin Chinese and although he was ill, he fulfilled a lifelong goal of traveling to China. At John's request, there will not be a funeral. Friends are invited to celebrate his life on January 3, 2015 at the Italian American Lodge - 1351 W. 18th St., Merced, CA, 95340 from noon to 3:00.
