Glass, Gerald W. - Merced
Gerald 'Jerry' William Glass October 12, 1931 - August 26, 2015 Jerry passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on 8/26/15 in Merced, CA. He was born in Williamsport, PA and grew up in Jersey Shore, PA. As a young man he enlisted in the Air Force where he spent four years entertaining the troops while playing his trombone in various bands.  In 1958, he married Jean E. Russell (also from Jersey Shore, PA) and they settled in Lynwood, CA where Jerry was a letter carrier with the US Postal Service for many years. In 1999, he and Jean moved to Merced to be closer to their daughter.      During the last several years of his life, dementia claimed the person he once was.  Although he struggled with many things over the years, he always maintained a happy and contented demeanor and never lost his quirky sense of humor. He enjoyed a great love of jazz music and was an active ham radio operator for many years.       Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; parents, Ora and Hattie (Bryner) Glass; sisters, Ruth Neff and Marian Herritt; and brother, Donald Glass, all of PA.      He is survived by his daughter, Joyce, her husband, Larry Hall and their daughter, Jillian, all of Merced. He is also survived by his step-daughter, Connie, her husband, Rev. James Fladland (PA); sisters-in-law, Marjorie Russell and Mary Glass; and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving Jerry are members of a family branch, only recently discovered, that include half-brother Don Glass of Merced and Robert Glass (FL), and half-sister Linda Burns (PA).      The family would like give special thanks, appreciation, and gratitude to Tera and Freddy Winkle and the staff of 'Just Like Home' care facility of Merced, who took exemplary care of Jerry during these last three years; even when his disease made him difficult to handle. In addition, the family is eternally grateful to Hinds Hospice for the last few months of specialized care Jerry received. All of his local doctors and caregivers gave him superior care and maintained his dignity until the end.      Services will be held in Jersey Shore, PA, at a later date, when he and his beloved wife, Jean, will be buried together. Private cremation arrangements were handled by the Neptune Society. The family requests memorial donations be made in Jerry's name to Hinds Hospice of Merced, 410 W. Main Street, CA 95340. www.cvobituaries.com
