Hubert Walsh Obituary

Hubert was born January 16, 1925 in Blue Ridge, Texas, to Elbert (Pat) and  Ida Walsh, the youngest of 8 children. He died February 10, 2014 at the Franciscan Convalescent Hospital in Merced, California. Raised by a single mother, he worked on farms and picked cotton to help his family. He graduated from Anna High School in June, 1943, and entered the US Army, joining the Greatest Generation serving the United States in World War II. Hubert saw service in France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe, and was discharged in January 1946.  He joined the US Air Force and served in the Berlin Air Lift, the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam War, retiring in 1969. Hubert subsequently attended and graduated from Merced College and Stanislaus State. He worked as a substitute teacher for Merced City Schools and Merced High School and as a weigh-master for Ragu during summers.
Hubert met the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Worthen, while stationed in Roswell, NM. On Thanksgiving 1946 they were traveling on the same bus, she to visit her brother in Oklahoma and he to visit his mother in Texas. Their first date was one week later. They married the day after Christmas 1947 and were married for 63 years.  Hubert loved to tell this story every holiday season. They lived in twenty homes in 6 states and raised  3 children, Hubert Jr., Susan, and Keith.
Hubert was a devoted Christian and a deacon in the Southern Baptist Church.  He loved working on cars and helping friends, neighbors, and his children with projects in their homes. He loved taking care of his grandchildren.
Hubert was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his parents, his brothers Henry, Jessie Lee, and R.A., his sisters Annie, Thelma Jo, Louise, and Eva, his brothers-in-law Charles Edward Jr., Clifford, Elmer, and Hugh and his sister-in-law Margaret. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Hubert Jr. and Rita (Merced), Keith and Denise (Fresno), Susan and Philip (Merced), and his grandchildren and great grandchildren,  Melissa and Matthew and their children  Jarrett and Ronan (Atwater),  Caitlin and Joey (Fresno), Lindsay (Corvallis OR), and Travis (Merced), and his sister-in-law Agnes Dale (Las Cruces, NM). He is also survived by close family friends Darlene Nelson, Stephanie Nelson, and Charlyn Myers Alvara, and by nephews, nieces, cousins, and loving friends.
The family gives heartfelt thanks to Drs. Robert Streeter and John Paik-Tesch,  MFA nurses and staff, Franciscan nurses and staff, Amy Marchini and staff, and Bell Vallador and staff for the care and support they gave Hubert and those who loved him in the last few years.
A memorial to honor Hubert will be held Sunday March 23 at 2:00 p.m. at the Creekside Evangelical Free Church, 2876 G Street in Merced. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Creekside Evangelical Free Church.

As one of Hubert and Mary's former caregivers, I'd like to express my admiration of how they lived their lives and the fun and kindness that I experienced. My memory of the Walshs will always be a favorite memory of my when I reflect on the people I have cared for. Thanks to Susan and Hub for being so kind. Marcee Lander
