John Ward Sr. was born on October 9, 1919 in Waelder, Texas to parents Olender and Julia Ward. He passed away peacefully on September 13, 2013 in Merced, California at the age of 93. John was raised and attended schools in Waelder, Texas. He enjoyed fishing and hunting for pheasants, which always brought along his dogs. In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army and fought in WW11. While serving he traveled to Ireland and England. He received a Good Conduct Medal for his services. After his years of service from the military in Merced County, he married Novella (Massey) Ward in 1947. They settled in Merced where he began a career of 66 years as a dedicated Cement Finisher. John loved God, where he attended Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of which he served as Deacon. He was a member of Pheasant Club in Los Banos and also a member of Cement Masons, always willing to give a helping hand to the community.
He is survived by his children, John L. Ward Jr. (Barbara), Patricia Ann Ward, Edward Lee Ward Sr. (Hanna), Joe Albert Ward Sr. David Lee Ward, 20 grandchildren a host of great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his grandparents, John Winkfield & Millie Williams, parents; Olender Ward & Julia Winkfield Ward, his wife Novella Ray Ward and daughter Julia Mae Ward and son Donnie Ray Ward, sisters; Eunice Ward, Beulah Ward, Olla Ward and Eula Ward, brothers; Caranza Ward, Ollie Ward, Olender Ward Jr., Walter Ward and Lester Ward.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Monday, September 30, 2013 from 2-8pm at Ivers & Alcorn Funeral Home, located at 901 W. Main Street in Merced. Home Going services will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church located at 404 6th street in Merced with burial and military honors to follow at Merced District Cemetery in Merced.

Thank you Lord God for giving us Mr. Ward, who was, without a doubt, a kind and caring Godly leader, mentor and role-model for our entire community. It is people like Mr. Ward that make the world a better place and he will be greatly missed!
