Gilbert was born on August 28, 1926 to Franklin and Ruth Herman in Chowchilla, California. He passed away peacefully on Monday, July 1, 2013 in Merced.
He grew up on the family dairy near Merced, attended local Seventh Day Adventist schools, and was inducted to serve as an Army
Surgical Tech on a hospital ship in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater near the end of World War II.
After returning home, he met his wife Dorothy Hackett in Merced and graduated from La Sierra College in Riverside. They raised their six children in Merced where Gilbert worked as an Underwriter for Farmers Insurance, retiring after 39 years.
Gilbert focused on his family, taking long family vacations each summer, and later, visiting his children whenever he could. He was fascinated with trains and collecting memorabilia.
Gilbert was a wonderful father who will be sorely missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Laura Glover, Charlotte Lopp, and Betty Miolano, and by his brother Albert.
He is survived by his brother Don and his children Penny Williams, Linda Blockhuizen, Elizabeth "Zebbie" Myrick, Gerald Herman, and Heidi Fogle, sixteen grandchildren, and twenty - one great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at Ivers & Alcorn located at 901 W. Main Street in Merced, followed by military honors and burial at Evergreen Memorial Park located at 1480 B. Street in Merced. www.cvobituaries.com
