JOE PEREZ Obituary

JOE ALVEREZ PEREZ, SR.
MAY 15, 1929 - APRIL 3, 2012
Joe Alverez Perez Sr., 82 years of age, passed away   April 3rd at home surrounded by family.  He was born in Tuolumne, Calif. on May 15, 1929.  In 1937, he along with his family moved to the Merced area (father, Jesse Cavral Perez; mother, Ruperta Griego Alverez; brothers John and Alfred (Daniel); sisters Jessie and Esther).  He attended Galen Clark School in Merced.  At 17 years of age he started working for the Southern Pacific Railroad.  While working for the railroad he met the love of his life, Leonila (Nita) Sosa Galindo. They married Sept. 9, 1947.  He became a tile setter by learning the trade from Walt Norton.  In 1963, he and Nita along with his older brother, John and his wife Phyllis opened Tequila Café in Winton.  In 1965 through hard work and perseverance, he opened his own tile business, Atwater Tile and with Nita opened the Mexican restaurant La Nita's Café, all the while raising 5 sons. Joe was never one to be idle.  He was not only productive and industrious in business but also the various service organizations he was a member of (Free and Accepted Masons, Livingston-Hills Ferry Lodge #236, PM 1977 & 1979 and Mariposa Lodge #24, PM 2001; Fresno Scottish Rite; Tri County Scottish Rite in Merced; San Joaquin Valley Shriners; Merced/Mariposa Shrine Club, Pres. 1994; Shrine Arabians Unit; Livingston Chapter #531 OES, PWP 1985).  Joe was preceded in death by his parents, grandchild, Matthew, brother, John and his beloved wife of 64 yrs, Nita.  He is survived by his five sons, Joe Jr. (Rosie), Rudy (Debbie), Bob (Amy), Ricky (Lynn), Gabe (Michele), 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Joe will forever be remembered for many reasons and one being his beautiful singing voice.  Whenever he was at an event that had mariachis, he had the ability to get up and lead the group into many traditional Mexican songs, his voice sounding even better than the "professionals".  God bless you Dad, until we meet again.     Friends and family are invited to remember and celebrate the life of Joe Alverez Perez.  Visitation will be on Thursday, Apr. 12th from 4-8pm (wake service 7pm) at Wilson Family Funeral Chapel, 1290 Winton Way, Atwater.  Funeral service will take place on Friday, Apr. 13th 10am at Evergreen Christian Center, 5935 N. Winton Way, Winton.  Burial will follow at Winton Cemetery.
