Alvaro Avelar Velho passed away on Monday, January 2, 2017, at his home in Hilmar, CA. He was 87. Al was born July 9, 1929, in Fajinzha, Flores, Azores, and came to the Merced area in 1956. He was a self-employed dairyman in the Merced and Fresno area.
On August 2, 1958, he married his beloved Rosalie Labenderia. In 1970, the family moved to Fort Bragg, Ca, where he worked in the lumber industry until he retired in 1992. In 2005, they returned to Merced. In 2015, they purchased a home in Hilmar.
On January 10, 2016, Rosalie passed away. Since her passing this last year, Alvaro has been ill, saying he was missing his Rosalie and the 57 years they were together. He was a member of P.F.S.A (Portuguese Fraternal Society of America.)
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rosalie. His parents, Joe & Maria Velho; his brother, Joe A. Velho and sister, Zulmira Furtado.
He is survived by his daughter, Frances Louise Velho of Jacksonville, Florida; son, Robert Lawrence Velho of Steamboat Springs, Colorado; 7 Grandchildren; 10 Great-Grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. Alvaro is further survived by his brother-in-law, Larry (Susan) Labenderia; Sisters-in-law, Arlene (Eddie) Mendes, and Dianne (George) Bianchi, and his remaining cousins, Louise (Tom) Chivers and George (Connie) Corvelo.

Friends and family are welcome to attend a visitation on Sunday, Janaury 8, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 P.M., at Ivers & Alcorn Funeral Home, 901 W. Main Street in Merced. A Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held on Monday, January 9, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. following a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Atwater. The Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Merced.
