Jovita Alvarez Obituary

Jovita S. Alvarez, one of the founders of the Golden Valley Health Centers, died Saturday, but memories about her will remain alive among thousands of people that she touched during her lifetime.

Alvarez, 79, was ill and died of natural causes. She was born in McAllen, Texas.

In the summer of 1966 she moved to California, along with her husband, eight children and her parents. All 12 of them moved halfway across the country in a station wagon. "We ended up in Merced, our station wagon stopped here," said Estevan Alvarez, the second-youngest son.

My condolences to her family. I had the pleasure of working with her at the Merced Family Health Center before it was called Golden Valley. She was a staunch supporter for womens rights and the rights of migrant farmworkers. She made a huge impact on me and my decision to return to college and earn a degree as a bilingual educator. God bless and console her family. I am sure we will meet again in a better place. Dahlia Garza

I'm sorry we had lost touch in the last few years. We had lots of fun on our road trips to Democratic functions with Jovita singing most of the time in my car. What a sweet woman, yet an inspiration to many for her drive and fight to help others for decades. God bless you and keep you in peace, Jovita.

I remember when the Alvarez family first got here. Jovita was a good friend of my mother Connie S. Moreno. She helped us, her sons and many of us get involved in the advancement for our people. She was an activist and more over a leader for the poor. She will be missed but not forgotten. Thanks Jovita for all you contributed.
