KAREN LYNN SCIALABBA
NOVEMBER 10, 1960 - FEBRUARY 14, 2014
Karen Scialabba, a Merced/Sonora resident for 25 years, died February 14, 2014 at Stanford Medical Center after a five-year struggle with cancer. She was 53 years old.
Born in Ogden, Utah, Karen lived in St Louis, MO., Detroit, Mich., & San Jose, CA.
She graduated from Branham High School in San Jose, CA, in 1978. After high school she went directly to work for Pacific Gas & Electric Co. as a personnel clerk & later became a principal compliance analyst. She worked for PG&E for 28 years before taking a medical retirement.
Karen was a member of the Valley Vintage Car Club in Merced. She loved to cook & enjoy the beauty of the seasons by planting & caring for her flower gardens thoughout the year. While her daughters were in Middle School, she supported their participation in the traveling softball competition, traveling with them throughout the state. As a compliance supervisor with PG&E she traveled extensively throughout the San Joaquin Valley & San Francisco Bay Area. It was through her work that she met her husband Steve Scialabba, who was a Superintendent at PG&E. They were married 12 years. The last 5 years of their marriage were the years Karen was in extensive cancer treatment & had two bone marrow procedures. Steve was in step with her the whole way, loving & supporting her every moment of every day. The two of them never gave in, never gave up.
Karen had two bone marrow transplants. Her sister Susan donated her bone marrow to Karen for the second transplant, which was  a perfect match, a rarity. They were together about a month during this procedure.
Karen attended Central Presbyterian Church in Merced for three years. She had a heart for less fortunate people. She contributed to many with food & clothing.
Karen is survived by her husband, Salvadore (Steve) Scialabba, of Merced/Sonora, CA. Three daughters; Emily (Ebon) Brown, of Winchester, CA., Samantha (Jason) Chavez, of Atwater, CA., & Randi Migues, of Livingston, CA. Her stepson Brad Scialabba, of Eureka, CA., her parents John & Sylvia Hardy, of Merced, CA., her sister Susan (Robert) Stravitz of Lexington, KY., two brothers; Robert Hardy, of San Francisco, CA., & Nathan (Claudine) Hardy, of Folsom, CA., & nine grandchildren' Kayen, Adrick, Liam, Allannah, Hailey, Richard, Logan, Cambria & Vayda, whom she cherished.
Karen's husband, Steve, & her family would like to thank Dr's. who treated & cared for Karen. Dr. Katherine Jones, of Sonora, CA., & Dr. Benjamin & the BMT team Stanford Cancer Center, Stanford, CA.
A Celebration of Karen Scialabba's Life will be held on March 25, 2014, 11:00 am at Central Presbyterian Church, 1920 Canal Street, Merced, CA.
