William Franklin Elliott
William Franklin "Bill" Elliott, 97, was born on Jan. 13, 1917 in Mariposa, CA, to Charles M. and Ida M. Elliott of Elliott's Corner, and died on July 30, 2014 in Merced, CA, of natural causes.  He was raised and lived in Mariposa County until he entered the US Army in January of 1941 for his one year of selective service.  In December everything changed with the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese and Bill was then in for the duration.  He met Alice Donna Plaza while stationed at Fort Ord, CA, and they married on April 25, 1943, shortly before he was sent to Europe where he spent the duration of his enlistment, being stationed in England, France, and Germany before the end of hostilities in Europe.
When he returned home to Mariposa he helped charter the VFW post there and remained an active member until his death.  He was also active in the IOOF in Mariposa, and the American Legion in Merced, and was a friend of the Elks Lodge in Merced.  He and Alice had a son, Charles Michael Elliott, in March of 1948, followed by a daughter, Donna Isabel Elliott, in June of 1950.  He worked for the Mariposa County Road Department for about 19 years before hiring on with the State Department of Water Resources and moving to Merced in 1964.  He then worked on the California Aqueduct, following its progress to completion in Hemet, CA, before retiring in 1978 and returning to Mariposa.  He and Alice moved to Merced in 1987 to be closer to medical facilities and lived there until both of their deaths.
He is survived by son Mike Elliott of Sacramento, and daughter Donna Elliott Bauer, of Bakersfield and a host of nieces and nephews, mostly in Mariposa and Merced, and was fondly called "Uncle Bill" by nearly anyone younger than his generation.  He was preceded in death by his wife Alice Plaza Elliott, his brothers John Elliott and Robert Elliott, infant sister MaryElizabeth Elliott, and by his sisters Jessie Hilton, Edith Peterson, and Ida Brown.
A memorial service will be held at McKay Hall in Cathey's Valley (2820 St Hwy 140) at 11 am on Saturday Sept. 27th, with burial to follow in the Odd Fellows portion of the Mariposa Cemetery at 2 pm.
