Lemuel Melvin Mathis (Lem) age 93 passed away on October 2, 2013 in Merced CA., where he has been a resident for 67 years.
Born in Vero Beach, FL. to parents Melvin and Lydia Mathis, he grew up on the family farm and was the last surviving sibling of eleven children. In his youth he and his brother would can and sell tomatoes (three per jar) to earn money. As an adult he joined the Army Air Corp. where he was a B25 pilot during WWII. It was around this time he was stationed at Castle Air Base he met his future bride Betty at a dance, where he recalled to many "the girl he had met in the watermelon colored dress." They soon married and had just celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary two days prior to his passing..
Lem was part of the Freeman Auto Body family for 40 years where his love of cars was apparent in his fully restored 1947 Lincoln Zepher (pace car yellow). He was a member of the Valley Vintage car club for many years
He was quite the handy man and loved working with tools , a skill that he passed on to son Jeff. He also loved to garden, along with his daughter Julie, they planted and tended gardens together. Son Steve picked up dads passion for Baseball, watching many games together.
He is survived by loving wife Betty, son Jeff Mathis, daughter Julie (Will) Uher and son Steve (Paula) Mathis.
A memorial will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at Ivers and Alcorn Funeral Home in Merced.
