Collier, Charles Russell - Redwood City
Charles Russell Collier April 10, 1923 - April 25, 2016 Atherton Charles Russell Collier of Atherton, CA passed away peacefully at home in his sleep on April 24, 2016. Shortly before, "Russ" had celebrated his 93rd birthday with a gathering of family members on April 10th. He was born in St. Louis, MO in 1923, the only child of Pauline and Charles Collier. While Russ was still young, the Colliers relocated to Belmont, CA. After graduating from Sequoia High School, Russ attended Stanford University where he completed his Master's degree in Business Administration and competed on the track team. Russ was extremely proud that he worked part-time to fund his own university education. While at Stanford, he eagerly courted the woman who would eventually become his beloved wife, Carol Lineer. They were to enjoy nearly 70 years together in a wonderful and happy marriage. But first, World War II intervened, and upon graduation he entered the U.S. Army to serve as an artillery officer in the 69th Infantry Division. While acting as a forward observer during an assault in Germany, Russ spotted a battery of German 88mm guns. Although wounded by enemy shelling, Russ refused to be evacuated until he called in American fire to destroy the German emplacement. For these actions, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After recovering from his wounds, Russ rejoined the 69th deep in Germany, where he commanded a reconnaissance platoon that made the historic link-up between U.S. forces and the Soviet Army. To commemorate and honor this action, in December of 2015 the Russian Consul General from San Francisco traveled to the Collier home in Atherton to award Russ The Ribbon of Saint George, one of the most recognized and respected symbols of military valor in Russia. After his return to California, he married Carol and he began his work career, first in advertising and then in finance before establishing his own real estate investment company, Collier Investments and Menlo Management Company. Among the many real estate developments that Russ created over the course of his long career, the well-known and award-winning Menlo Center in Menlo Park was one of his most outstanding local contributions, inaugurating a new era of vibrant outdoors, social gathering places in that town. Russ and Carol were blessed with three daughters: Constance, Kathleen and Suzanne. With the addition of five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, the Collier home in Atherton grew to be a busy and festive gathering place, especially during holidays. Russ loved his family above all else, and nothing brought him greater joy than being surrounded by all four generations. Russ was an avid fisherman, tennis player, golfer and skier, and shared his love for sports with the family. Russ held fast and found strength in a deeply rooted faith his entire life. He was a member of St. Denis parish in Menlo Park and faithfully attended the annual men's retreat at El Retiro Jesuit Retreat Center in Los Altos. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either entity. The entire family wishes to express their deepest thanks to the many individuals at Matched CareGivers and Pathways Hospice, and especially to our wonderful friend Breny Espana; all extended a remarkable level of compassion and skilled care to Russ that brought peace of mind to our family. We all will miss him dearly. Russ is predeceased by his mother Pauline, father Charles and daughter Constance Collier Gould. He is survived by his wife Carol, daughters Kathleen (Kenneth) Lee and Suzanne (Alan) Sclafani, son-in-law Robert Gould, grandchildren Elisabeth, Russell, Kristen, Matthew, Peter and great-grandchildren Juno & Russell.
