A. Marvin Atkins passed away at age 88. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Russ Hall, granddaughter, Melissa Hall, all of Menlo Park, CA, and nephews Randall Atkins of Lexington, KY and Charles Atkins of Raleigh, NC.
Marvin was born in Huntington, West Virginia, to Orin and Dorothy Atkins. He played basketball for Huntington Central High School, leading his team to the state championship as captain in 1944. That September he enlisted in the Navy at the Brooklyn Naval Yard. The war ended as Marvin's PT boat arrived in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged 22 months later.
He graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1950 with a B.A. in business administration and returned to Huntington where he began a 35-year career selling corporate life insurance. He met Mary Wahls at an insurance meeting and they married in 1953. Marvin was a certified Chartered Life Underwriter.
In 1987, Mary and Marvin retired and moved from Barrington, IL and to The Villages in San Jose, CA to be closer their daughter and her family, where he was active in the Villages Chapel, SIRS, and golf. In 2009, they moved to Redwood City. Mary passed away in 2012 following a stroke. Marvin's hobbies included stamp collecting, golf and bridge. He proudly celebrated his 50th anniversary of sobriety on Feb. 12, 2014, and attended weekly AA meetings throughout his life to support others dealing with alcoholism. A service to celebrate his life will be held on Friday, August 8th, 11 am, at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, 950 Santa Cruz Avenue, Menlo Park, with a reception following.
