Cdr. Benjamin T. Frana, USNA Ret., 96, of Cupertino, CA, passed away, Saturday, April 20, 2013 at The Forum. Born in Protivin, IA in 1916, Ben joined the Navy to see the world and that he did. In the process he graduated from the Naval Academy in 1940. He was on the Battleship Tennessee during the bombing of Pearl Harbor; he was the gunnery officer on USS Baldwin and supported operations in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and the landing at Normandy on D-Day. By the end of WWII
, he was the Commanding Officer of the USS Kendrick. He served on the cruiser Helena during the Korean Conflict
. He retired from the Navy in 1966.
Ben has been living in the San Francisco Bay Area since retiring from Northwestern University
in 1981. He is survived by a daughter, a son, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Ben is buried with his wife Josephine Frana in Evanston, IL. He will be sorely missed by his friends and family.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Simmons' Catholic Church, 1860 Grant Rd., Los Altos, Ca. at 10:00 AM Thursday May 2. A reception will be held after mass at The Forum, 23500 Cristo Rey Drive, Cupertino, CA. From 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ben and Josephine Frana Scholarship Fund; St. John's College High School, 2607 Military Rd., NW, Washington, DC 20015; or to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, 3800 Fettler Park Drive, Suite 104, Dumfries, VA. 22025.
