Eileen Smythe Parsons
January 24, 1920 - November 21, 2012
Resident of San Carlos
Eileen Smythe Parsons, long time resident of San Carlos, passed away at her home on Wednesday, November 21, 2012. The fifth child of Charles Monck Smythe and Grace Genevieve Converse, Eileen was born during a snowstorm on January 24, 1920 in Ridgefield, Washington. She was a lifelong learner who valued family, education, hard work, honesty and integrity, being active, and above all, enjoying life's adventures. Not long before her death she reminded her family that laughter is the best tonic.
Eileen was raised and educated in Ridgefield and preferred being outside with her brothers doing farm chores over being inside doing housework. She graduated from the University of Washington in 1941 and taught physical education in the Seattle area for several years before becoming a flight attendant for United Airlines. It was on a United flight returning to San Francisco that she met Francis Joseph "Bill" Parsons, a United meteorologist at the time, who was traveling waitlist in the jump seat. They were married on December 4, 1948 in Berkeley, California. Eileen taught as a substitute teacher for Sequoia Unified School District for a number of years after her own children were in school. She was active in the San Carlos branch of AAUW for more than 50 years and deeply enjoyed her many associations there; she later also enjoyed participating with Widows and Widowers of San Mateo County. She served a term on the San Carlos Parks Recreation Commission and volunteered at Sequoia Hospital for many years.
Eileen is preceded in death by husband F.J./Bill, as well as her parents, siblings and their spouses. Eileen is survived by children Linda (Jim) Stolle of Houston, TX; Kathie (Pat) Debenham of Orem, UT; Mike (Terry) Parsons of Paradise, CA; and Sara (Mike) McDougall of Santa Cruz, CA; and by 13 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. The family expresses thanks to Pathways Hospice and special thanks to Susan and Carolyn from Home Care Specialists for their loving and capable care in the last weeks of Eileen's life. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Pets In Need of Redwood City. A celebration of Eileen's life will be held on January 26, 2013, from 2 - 4 PM, at her home in honor of what would have been her 93rd birthday. We'll see you again, Mom.
