Ernest (Ernie) Ralph
1918 - 2013
Resident of San Jose
On August 11, 2013 our loving father passed peacefully in his sleep having suffered a stroke one month ago. He is preceded in death by our dear brother, Gary.
Dad was born in Los Gatos where he lived until age 13 when he and his brother and sister were placed in the Home of Benevolence after the death of his mother, Grace.
He married Rosemary Mauzy in 1940. They were members of the San Jose First Christian Church for over 60 years where he served as an elder and on the board. Dad graduated from San Jose State College in 1942 where he was editor of the yearbook in his senior year. Soon after he joined the Navy and was sent to Oklahoma to teach metal smith classes to airplane mechanics during WWII
Returning to San Jose after the war, he worked for a small rubber stamp business and also developed skills in printing services. In 1948 he and Bob Brian went into partnership with Brian and Ralph Printers, a successful business which was sold in 1971, when dad opened Superior Rubber Stamp Co. He retired in 1977 to pursue his property-development hobby - building homes, motels, a shopping and medical center.
In 1983 dad accidently discovered a half-brother he was unaware of at a church meeting in Modesto. This began a wonderful friendship over the next few years, each learning new things about their father and uncovering many coincidences in their lives.
Dad enjoyed traveling, reading, woodworking and he loved sharing his mountain home on Donner Lake with family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Rosemary; children Diana Raynor (Leighton), San Jose; Nancy Mills (Hugh), New Zealand; Robin Volstorff, Santa Cruz; Dan Ralph (Kate), Scotts Valley and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at a later date.
Our Dad lived a rich life. A big part of it was family and friends, helping others and his Christian faith.
