Gene Levitz(1932 - 2014)

Gene Levitz
May 12, 1932 - April 25, 2014
Resident of Los Gatos
Gene M. Levitz, M.D., age 81, died early Friday morning, April 25, in his home.
Born in 1932 in Bethlehem, PA, to Lillian Neuman and Max Levitz, Gene was a scholar and athlete. He graduated from Lehigh University and went on to Temple University, where he received his doctorate in medicine.
He served as an Air Force doctor in Chateauroux, France from 1959 to 1962. It was here that he met the doctors that became his life-long friends. In 1962, Gene married Patricia Ann Fox of Honolulu, HI. The Levitzes joined the Peace Corps' public health team in Togo, West Africa in 1963. They then relocated to the Los Gatos/Saratoga area to be near the Chateauroux group, all of whom had settled in the region. After moving to Los Gatos in 1964, Dr. Levitz opened his medical office in San Jose and practiced family medicine for 47 years, finally closing his practice and retiring in December of 2012. During this time, he cared for multiple generations of families, performed house calls, and gave freely of his time and knowledge. He acted as mentor and sounding board to countless patients, many of whom became personal friends.
Besides medicine, Gene's two greatest passions in life were jazz and sports -- both professional and the endeavors of his children. He was a long-time 49er fan, holding season tickets for 30+ years and attending three of their Superbowl appearances. He was proud to be the team doctor for the Lynbrook High School football team for 33 years. Due to his over-exuberance at his daughter's soccer games, he became a coach in the local AYSO league for a number of winning seasons. He was an enthusiastic spectator during his son's run as quarterback of the Los Gatos High School football team, during which the Wildcats won the league championship under coach Charlie Wedemeyer. Dr. Levitz was also a fixture at the Monterey Jazz Festival from the late sixties until 2012, and frequented the Jazz on the Plaz series in his chosen home town of Los Gatos.
Gene is survived by his sister, Nancy Slack, of Delray Beach, FL, and his two children: Hanna Levitz of Los Gatos, CA; and Sam Levitz, of Honolulu, HI.
In lieu of any funeral, Gene requested that people raise a glass of good red wine and listen to some Stan Getz in his honor.
