George Carroll passed away in Los Gatos, CA at the age of 89. He was surrounded by his loving children, their spouses and his caregivers.
George was born in San Francisco to George LeRoy Carroll and Viola Main. He grew up in Los Gatos and graduated from Los Gatos High School in 1942. He joined the Army during WWII and flew with the 554th Bomb Squadron as an Airplane Mechanic Gunner flying 55 bombing missions over France and Germany. He donated his Bomber Jacket to the British American Air Museum in Duxford, Britain where it is on display. The opening ceremonies were attended by Queen Elizabeth II.
After the war, he went to San Jose State University where he studied aeronautics. He got his pilot's license and flew crop dusters before working for several commercial airlines as a Flight Engineer. His career took him around the world flying cargo planes including military personnel carriers. A highlight was flying for Disney when they used their new 360 degree cameras to film famous places around the globe. The film was shown at the Epcot Center in Disneyland. He retired from TransAmerica Airlines in1989.
George lived a full and adventurous life. He rode horses as well as motorcycles, ran in the Bay to Breakers and Napa Marathon where he finished in the top 10 senior category, skied at Lake Tahoe, competed in bicycle races and attended Air Shows around the country. He loved spending time with his family and traveling and had many close friends. His Irish roots were ever present in his hospitality towards everyone, especially strangers, and his ability to charm his friends with good food, drink and a great story.
He married his beloved, red-headed Peggy June Allen in Saratoga, CA in 1952, and raised three daughters, Gina, Andrea and Jamie. They adopted a son, Frank Alexander, in 1990. He will be missed by all. George was preceded in death by his wife of 57 yrs, Peggy, and his oldest daughter, Gina, age 50 (Ken Towner). He is survived by his children, Andrea (Frank) Lordeman, Jamie (Tim) Mandelke, Frank (Pat) Alexander and his grandchildren Denise (Dean) Tuttle, Nate (Lauren) Mandelke, Lauren Alexander (fiancé William Darr) and his great grandson, Ryan Tuttle. He is also survived by his nieces/nephews Steve Hammersly, (Katie Harrison), Laura (Tim) Swickard, Peter Hammersly (Caroline) and Lisa (Derek) Kirkland and their children.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Buddy and Bale, George's caregivers, who made his independent life possible. You are the best and we love you for that!
There will be a "Celebration of George's Life" at the Carroll Family Residence in Campbell on Sat, April 6th from 1pm-4pm.
