Grace Lin Su

Grace Lin Su
Resident of Los Altos
On November 14, 2013, Grace Lin Su went home to the Lord. Born Grace Lin in Anhui Province in China, Grace attended mission schools where she excelled in her studies. She was known for her wit and leadership skills. She earned a teaching degree from Beijing Normal University, and held positions as teacher, dean of students, and principal for elementary and secondary schools during WWII.
With close ties to the Nationalist government, she and her husband, Ting Su, fled Beijing in a daring escape on a small plane in 1949. They lived in Indiana where her husband completed graduate studies in education. Deeply patriotic, the young couple settled in Seaside then Pacific Grove where they both taught in the Defense Language Institute's Chinese Mandarin Department from the 50's to the 70's. Grace also taught some summer language classes at the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies. Widowed, Grace settled near her children in Silicon Valley in the 1980's, where she helped found a Chinese Christian Church of which she was profoundly dedicated.
Grace is survived by her two brothers (Mr. Ting Fan, and Ting An Lin) two daughters (Mabel and Ruth), a son-in-law(James Wheat), and two grandchildren (Jennifer and James Wheat), two nieces (Olivia and Sophia Lin), and a nephew (Daniel Lin).
Viewings will be held on Thursday evening, November 21 from 4 to 8 pm, and Friday November 22, from 10 am to 12 noon. A memorial service will held at Palo Alto's Alta Mesa Memorial Chapel, Friday, November 22, from 12 noon to 1pm.
Donations may be made in her name to The Chinese Christian Church of Mountain View, or American Breast Cancer Association.
