Lawrence Glendinning
July 8, 1940 - February 22, 2013
Resident of Oakland
Lawrence Joseph Glendinning, 72, of Oakland, died on February 22, 2013, at Kaiser Hospital, Oakland, after complications from emergency surgery. The family would like to thank the staff at Kaiser Oakland for their outstanding and kind care. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Judith Creamer Glendinning. Their marriage was never boring and was built on a deep love, shared values and mutual respect. He is also survived by his two daughters, Catherine Lamy of Trumbull, CT and Heather McGrew of Oakland. Larry welcomed Richard Lamy and Kourtney McGrew into his family as sons. Delighted to be the grandfather of Luke, Ryan and Dylan Lamy and Ruby and EJ McGrew, he often attended their many games and dramatic pursuits, even if it meant flying cross country to do so. He is also survived by a sister Ann Haeckl, of Los Altos Hills, several brothers and sisters in law and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Larry was a warm, thoughtful and loyal friend to many who will miss him. He was generous not only philanthropically, but with his time and commitment to many individuals and organizations. He was a good listener. He believed he could fix anything. A supporter of the arts, he enjoyed theater, dance and museums. He was an avid world traveler with Judith, and his interest in museum architecture turned into the impetus for many of their trips together. He was a crossword puzzle expert and delighted in books. If it was in print he read it. With a lifelong interest in the welfare and education of children, Larry had a successful 33 year career in the Belmont School System as an elementary school teacher, counselor and principal. A memorial will take place on Thursday, April 18 at 4:00 p.m. at the Piedmont Community Hall, 711 Highland Avenue, Piedmont.
