Martin Blatner

Martin Blatner Resident of Santa Clara Passed away in San Jose on May 13, 2013. He was 91. Mr. Blatner grew up in Passau, Germany where he lived until fleeing the Nazis with his family in 1939. He lost several members of his extended family in the Holocaust. Upon arriving in America, relatives took his family in and he apprenticed as a watchmaker in Albany, NY. World War II ended, Mr. Blatner became an American citizen, and at the age of 23 found himself drafted and returning to Germany. He was sent back for 2 years as an interpreter for a military intelligence center near Frankfurt. Once he had served his new country, Mr. Blatner returned to America eventually settling in California. In 1958, he opened Martin Jewelers in San Jose. He worked there full-time until his death. Martin married Gertrude Quillmann in 1950 and Jackie Punte in 1976. He is survived by his children: Michelle (Steve) Miller, Denver, CO; Michael, Bend, OR; Robert (Sarah), Redwood City; David (Anita), San Jose, along with 7 grandchildren: Jeremy, Max, Shani, Andrew, Eric, Kayla and Heather. He was devoted to his family and is remembered as a kind, gentle man who was fond of nature, theater, and his Jewish heritage. Graveside services were held at Los Gatos Memorial Park.
