Nancy B. Bratman(1929 - 2014)

Nancy B. Bratman
Resident of Palo Alto
Nancy B. Bratman died on March 15, 2014, at the age of 84.
She was born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 7, 1929, only child of Hyman and Esther (Schwartz) Bylan, and raised in Grand Rapids. She was a proud alumna of the University of Michigan, where, as an undergraduate, she was an editor of the Daily and a stalwart of the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. She worked for several years in New York and Chicago as a magazine editor, initially as a guest editor on Mademoiselle, and throughout her life was an elegant writer with impeccable grammar.
Nancy was the proud and loving mother of four sons. She and her family moved to California in 1959, and over the next half century she lived in Sunnyvale, Los Altos, Cupertino, and lastly in Palo Alto, at the Moldaw Family Residences. Busy as a housewife and mother, she also found time over the years to volunteer at the El Camino Hospital gift shop and to support progressive social causes and political candidates. She was especially active at Congregation Beth Am, where she was a library volunteer and a devoted student of Judaism.
Nancy could usually be found reading a book on American or British history, listening to classical music, attending plays or concerts, traveling around the US with her sons or with friends, or just chatting. Conversation was her favorite activity, and her loved ones admired her as a precise and analytical thinker. She stayed in life-long touch with friends she had made as early as the age of four.
Friends and family are invited to funeral services at Congregation Beth Am, 26790 Arastradero Rd., Los Altos Hills, on Wednesday, March 19, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Hills of Eternity Memorial Park in Colma, next to her son Michael. She is survived by her sons David (Berni), Joel (Miriam), and Benjamin, and by her former husband, Robert.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the .
