Peter Maurice Joachim

Peter Maurice Joachim
Sept. 14, 1934-Dec. 19, 2013
Resident of Saratoga
Pete, 79, of Saratoga passed away from natural causes with his family by his side. Born in New York on September 14, 1934 to Paul and Deane Joachim, Pete was younger brother to Robert and was raised in Jamaica, Queens. A gifted athlete, he excelled in baseball and basketball where he usually played above his age and was known for his scrappiness and desire to win. He graduated from Jamaica High School and went to New York University where he studied math and statistics and also earned his MBA. Pete joined IBM and rapidly rose through the ranks as an executive in manufacturing and an expert on product quality. He made tremendous contributions to IBM's success both in Silicon Valley and around the world. After 31 years with Big Blue, Pete joined Applied Materials where he helped that company become a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing before retiring in 1995. In 1956, Pete married Geraldine Kirk, living in New Jersey and Connecticut as he began his career with IBM. In 1966 they made the first of two moves to the Bay Area and fell in love with California. After returning briefly to New Canaan, they settled for good in Saratoga in 1969 and raised a family there. Offered an assignment with IBM in Europe, Pete and the family moved to Largs, Scotland for two adventurous years where virtually no country was off limits to the traveling Joachims. Pete had an amazing passion for Scotland, and felt a connection to the country and his Scottish friends that never waned. Returning to Saratoga in 1976, Pete and Gerri made many close friends and shared a wonderful life. He enjoyed retirement in Lake Tahoe, Rancho Mirage, and Saratoga, where he was able to visit with his family and delight in being a loving grandfather to his four grandchildren. Pete was active in the community with Kiwanis and at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he regularly attended Mass for over 40 years. Pete was known for his leadership, intellect and generosity, and for his love for his family, especially his wife Gerri. As Gerri's health declined due to Alzheimer's, he was a committed caregiver, supporting her through incredibly difficult times, and ultimately her passing in 2002. He was also an avid and active sports fan, playing tennis and rooting for the Giants and the 49ers with a remarkable enthusiasm that he passed on to his children. Pete is survived by his children Patrice Miller and Paul Joachim, his son-in-law Daniel Miller and daughter-in-law Caroline Joachim, and his grandchildren Kaitlin and Daniel Miller, and Hoffmann and Phoebe Joachim. A vigil will be held on January 5th with visitation at 6:00pm and the service at 7:00pm at Darling & Fischer Mortuary 615 N. Santa Cruz Avenue, Los Gatos, CA. The funeral service will take place on January 6th at 11:00am at Sacred Heart Church, Saratoga, followed by a burial at Madronia Cemetery.
