Resident of Pleasanton
Dick Chagnon, age 74, passed away on January 6, 2014 after a four year battle with cancer. Dick was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up on the Massachusetts coast in Scituate. He joined the Navy in 1958, which brought him to California. He never looked back.
Dick started his business career after his discharge as a Branch Representative with Associates Commercial Credit. Subsequent to this he worked for Ford Motor Credit and opened their first office in San Jose, California. At that time he was the youngest Ford Branch manager in the Country. In 1976 Richard decided to follow his entrepreneurial spirit and struck out on his own, forming Monarch Leasing Corporation that October. For 37 years he guided Monarch Truck Center from a one man operation to the largest independently owned commercial truck rental and leasing company in the San Francisco Bay area.
Dick's motto has always been "Work hard, play hard" as exemplified by his love of everything action oriented. He was a skier, wind surfer, sky diver, flyer, sailer, scuba diver and world traveler. He had a big heart and had great empathy for the disadvantaged shown by his support of many charities and schools in the San Jose area.
He is survived by his wife and traveling companion of 25 years, Judy and was the proud and loving father of daughter Nicole (Tony) Guetersloh, of Omaha, Nebraska; son Todd Chagnon of Livermore and step-sons Kraig Austin (Heather) of Red Bluff and Kevin Austin (Eva) of Tracy. He was known as "Papa" to his granddaughter Haley Chagnon, grandsons Aidan and Lathan Guetersloh, Zack Austin, Jackson Austin and Nick Lugo.
He took special pride in his neice, Sophia Gassman and Nephews Zack and Leckie Gassman. He was preceeded in death by his much loved sister, Joan.
"If a man's wealth is judged by the friends he had and the people he touched, then Dick left us a very wealthy man indeed." His larger than life personality and generous heart will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
