Robert A. Eckel, a resident of Morgan Hill, was born August 27, 1938 in Bloomfield, NJ to Alexander and Mary Alonis Eckel and passed away peacefully on June 18, 2013, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 22 years Lisa Eckel, his two children Robert Jr., Marlina, his son in law Christian Miedler and his first wife, Irene Nikenday.
Robert served his country as a United States Marine. He attended Upsala College and New York University
, graduating with a degree in Physics. Robert was a highly respected lamp engineer, working for Westinghouse, PEK Labs, ILC Technology and Advanced Radiation Corporation designing specialty gas discharge lamps. He was instrumental in the design of the light source used on the Viking Lander, which landed on Mars and did experiments to find life.
Robert had a quick wit and liked a good joke. He enjoyed reading, science, fine dining, a good bottle of wine and especially the company of good friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be private with a celebration of life scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made in Robert's name to the
