Therese Michelson-Gordon
Aug. 22, 1920 - June 19, 2013
Resident of Saratoga
Our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Therese Michelson Gordon passed away on 6/19/13. She was one of seven sisters born to William and Christina Michelson in Martin, ND. After graduating early from high school she moved, at age 16, to live with her oldest sister in Lodi, CA where she worked in local canneries. Eventually she was able to enroll at the University of Minnesota, where she graduated with honors with her MD (1of 3 women out of a class of 100). During this time she met her husband George Gordon. Shortly after beginning her career as an OB/GYN her son Michael was born, followed 1 year later by her daughter Kathryn. The family moved from Minneapolis, MN to Saratoga, CA in 1960. Her interest in medicine changed so she enrolled at Stanford University where she obtained her degree in anesthesia and practiced in that capacity until age 65. After retiring, she attended college classes just for the love of higher education; anything from astrology to astronomy. Most notably were the languages she learned; Spanish, German, and French. Her final educational feat was to write a medical thesis on various disease processes afflicting some of our famous artists, written entirely in French. She was a long-standing member of the Unitarian Fellowship with whom she engaged in many humanitarian efforts. After her husband George died in 2005, she decided to move to Lodi to be closer to her daughter. She slowly succumbed to Alzheimer's disease at age 92. Therese would want to be remembered for her libertarian views on women's rights, as well as her charitable contributions to education and humanitarian efforts. She is survived by her son Michael Gordon, daughter Kathryn Behr, grandsons Marshall (Shana) and Aaron (Katie) Westfall, and great-grandchildren, Hannah, Taylor, Audrey and Nolan. For those who knew and loved her, her great mind and big heart will leave its legacy on us all. Many thanks go to Marilyn Brown in her role as family friend and P.O.A. Therese Gordon's service will be private and she will be laid to rest next to her husband of 52 years in Saratoga, CA. Any contributions in her name may be sent to the , alz.org (800-272-3900); or to a .
