Roger Winslow Obituary

Roger G. Winslow, Sr.
April 19, 1927 - June 20, 2016
Long-time Saratoga Resident
Roger George Winslow, Sr., devoted father of a dozen children, passed away peacefully the day after Father's Day. Roger was raised in Floral Park, New York and enjoyed summers at his grandparents' farm in Dover, New Hampshire. He graduated from Chaminade High School and went on to Manhattan College to study electrical engineering. He interrupted his studies to join the Navy at the end of World War II.
Inspired by John Kennedy to join in the space communications revolution and to provide for his family, he and his wife Terry in the winter of 1963 drove two station wagons loaded with their children from Long Island NY to the Bay Area where Roger began work as an electronics engineer for Philco Ford (later Ford Aerospace, now Space Systems Loral). At Ford he worked on telecommunication satellites and a magnetometer sent on Apollo 12 to the moon.
Whether at work, IEEE meetings, 4th of July parties in Saratoga, tennis mixers at Blue Lake Springs, Stanford football games, Manhattan College alumni events or Mayflower Society gatherings, Roger always warmly connected with old friends and caringly sought out new ones.
Raised during the Depression of the 1930's, Roger and Terry made education a priority and provided their sons and daughters the opportunity to attend college and pursue successful careers in engineering, public service, education, banking, accounting, insurance and computer science.
Roger's wife of 60 years, Terry passed away in 2010 and son Philip in 2003. Roger is survived by his sisters Grace and Marilyn of Nashville TN, his children, Roger Jr and Sue of San Jose, Gregory and Liz of San Jose, Lawrence and Clarissa of Baldwin Lake, Donna of Sunnyvale, Kathleen and Bill Nelson of Plano Texas, Cecilia and Gary Hageman of Mountain View, Mary and Scott Eschen of Saratoga, Stephen and Helen of Malden MA, Elaine and Scott Jacobs of Foster City, David and Katie of Culver City and Richard of San Jose. Lovingly missed by nearly two-dozen grandchildren and a dozen great-grandchildren.
A memorial service in the Bay Area will be held the last week of July. Details to follow. Please sign the on-line guest registry at mercurynews.com to receive information. Donations in Roger's honor may be made to the Tech Museum of San Jose or the Northern California Chapter of the MS Society.

Mr. Winslow, you sure raised a bunch of fine kids. I think the Winslows took up two rows at Ascension! Kathy was a fun friend in high school (she says I taught her to drive a stick), and Greg taught me how to be a real guitar player in Folk Mass. You left a great legacy here. I remember you being in the Men's Club with my dad, too. And the Lord says, "Well done, good and faithful servant." Winslows, please let me know about the service. So sorry...peace in your sorrow and joy in your remembering.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
