I was a student of Professor Doty in 2 separate classes at SJSU. He remembered me when he saw me the second time around and I appreciated that with so many students at SJSU.
I just heard from other students that he had passed away. We all shared a common thought and that although he was a tough teacher, he taught us all so much even beyond the textbook.
I always admired his straightforwardness and no nonsense approach to business and teaching. Once I saw pass the tough exterior, he was a really nice guy. I learned a lot from him as a business student. I will always remember his can of Pepsi or soda at the start of each class.
My condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and students of Professor Doty.

May Professor Lon Doty Rest in Paradise. He was passionate about his teachings and gave me a new found respect for Southwest (the company he believed has the best organizational behavior, haha :-)) I had the pleasure of taking his Org. Behavior class last semester and respected him very much. I am thankful for the opportunity to have learned from him and to have met him. You will be missed Professor Lon Doty, and never forgotten.

I had the pleasure of being a student in a few of Professor Doty's classes, one as recently as this past winter session. I was stunned and saddened to hear of his passing. My condolences go out to his family and friends. He was a brilliant professor in his field and a great personality to converse with. A true loss to San Jose State.

Lon was a great mentor to my son Scott Lara, he helped scott with many decisions regarding school and career path. However to my husband Paul and I and our daughter Emily, he was a great friend. He was so funny, and surprisingly adventurous! We had several wonderful trips with lon and my mom Judy. At the last thanksgiving I had with them he started off the "i am thankful for.... with saying having judy in his life and tears in his eyes. It was hard for the rest of us to follow, needless to say my husband was thankful for the mashe potatos!

I was really sorry to hear of Lon's death. He was part of a Cursillo group my husband and I were in. We had dinners together on a regular basis until several years ago. I always enjoyed our discussions and missed seeing him around St. James.

Lon was a good friend, a committed volunteer, an outspoken and intelligent thinker, and a man of honor. He served with me on the Board of Abode Services for 11 years, offering his guidance, wisdom and experience in our work on the Board and its committees. He was passionate about service to the community, giving freely of his time and treasure. Even though he was a bit absent minded (like a good professor !), he always fulfilled his commitments and supported others with theirs. I will miss the sparring we often engaged in, as he made me a more careful thinker with his willingness to disagree but still respect one another. It will be a long time before his voice will not be heard in my mind as we do our governance work at Abode Services. I will dearly miss a good friend.

Lon and I have served together on the board of Abode Services (formerly Tri-City Homeless Coalition) for 11 years. He was a vice president of the board and headed up the administration committee. He was always a valuable and good-humored voice on the board, never hesitating to raise questions or take a differing view if he thought it would strengthen the organization. Even though he won't be present at meetings, his voice will still do lasting good.
