Harold Newland Obituary

Harold R. Newland

Resident of San Jose

Dec. 4, 1940 Dec. 2, 2010

Harold R. Newland passed away on Thursday December 2nd after a long and courageous battle with emphysema. A devoted husband, father, and friend, his ability to convey a positive attitude on life, manifest in a strong work ethic and undying sense of fair play and sportsmanship, made him a deliverer of sage advice and fatherly consul to family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and acquaintances.

Harold was born in Meridian Township, Logan County, OK to James Otto and Lottie Belle Newland. After his father's untimely death, the family moved to Watsonville, California in 1944 where he attended school and later graduated from Watsonville High School. He excelled in football, basketball and track and field, continuing his interest in sports and outdoor recreation throughout his lifetime. His numerous hobbies and interests included Harley-Davidson motorcycles, water skiing, building black powder firearms, and competing in single action cowboy shooting. Harold retired after a 42-year career as a grocery clerk, 41 of these years with Lucky Stores where he reached the position of Assistant Store Manager before voluntarily demoting to spend time with his family, taking on the role of youth sports coach for his sons and hundreds of youngsters in the Blossom Valley/Santa Teresa community. His friendly demeanor and warm smile made him a favorite of store customers and colleagues.

Harold is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Rosemarie (Perry); son James, daughter-in-law Jennifer (Jones) and granddaughter Lindsay Newland of La Mesa, CA; and son Tom, daughter-in-law Jill (Tauscher) and grand-daughters Jessica and Amanda Newland of Morgan Hill, CA. He is also survived by brother Melvin Newland of Grants Pass, OR; sister Marguerite Bloom and brother Marion Newland, both of Watsonville, CA. He leaves behind many devoted brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and "adopted" children, along with many dedicated friendsall who will miss him.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Saturday December 11, 2010 from 12:30-1:30p.m. at Lima Family Erickson Memorial Chapel, 710 Willow Street in San Jose, CA.

Harold we will miss you dearly. Your smile and gift of warmth I always
got anytime we stopped to chat at work or a chance meeting on the street.
You always had a new story about your family or a recent trip you had enjoyed. The good old days were really that good!
I have always looked up to you and now I can by just looking up.
Rest easy my dear friend, your tough journey is done. Enjoy your
new one without all the bumps in the road..... Peace be with You.

Harold was my Uncle Harold as he is my father Marion’s younger brother. Uncle Harold was always the "cool" uncle. He had so many cool cars that I will always remember him by, his Riviera, the banana yellow step side truck and of course the Corvette. When I became an adult I spent time getting to know my Uncle and Aunt and always tried to make it a point to stop in to their home when I was in the area. Uncle Harold would share stories about how he and my father grew up and how they made the best of what they had. Uncle Harold and I both have an appreciation for guns and he would show me his collection that he was so proud of. I can remember being a little kid at my Nana’s house playing with my cousins in the play room and us kids making so much noise because we hadn’t seen each other since the last holiday. Uncle Harold would come down the hall, open the door and tell us to quiet down that we were all being too loud. Before he left and closed the door, he would always give a little grin to let us know he wasn’t as serious as he was trying to be. Good-bye Uncle Harold, love Scott

Rosemarie and family:

Rosemarie, we have only met you a couple of times but knew Harold while we lived in CA. Harold or "Hooty" as my two children would call him miss him very much. He always had a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face, always happy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
