Mary was a great lady who told me stories of her family history, Mary and my father were cousins. The two families immigrated together. Mary was three and my father, Henry Cruz, was 6 years old at the time. Their stories are the same. I wrote down all the stories she told me. I will give Nancy a copy. Thank you Mary for the legacy you have given all of us. Eleene Kraft

Grandma Mary,

Since the moment I met you, I knew you were special. You said I could call you "Grandma" since all of my own grandparents had passed away. And you grabbed and held my hand with warmth and sincerity.

I'll never forget the stories you shared with me: the ship ride from Spain to Hawaii when you were just a young girl; the horrible flu pandemic which took numerous lives and half of your hearing; growing up and working in the sugar cane fields of Maui; waking in the middle of the night to the signal of sardine ships coming into Monterey Bay, then heading down to the cannery to start work; having to be chaperoned on dates when you were a teenager; and so many others.

I'll also never forget the yummy Polvorones and Paella!

You gave us a century of love and caring, a legacy spanning five generations, and a lifetime of memories to cherish. The shrimp plant you gave me still grows in my yard - a living tribute to an inspirational and unforgettable woman.
