Patricia Levin Obituary

Patricia Edris Levin

Resident of San Francisco

Suddenly in San Francisco on September 16, 2010 at the age of 60. Loving daughter of Charles Pivnick and the late Janice Pivnick; beloved wife of Gary Levin for 39 years; caring mother of Jonathan and his fianc‚e Ariel Shulman, Marc and his fianc‚e Jennifer Landres, and Diana and her husband Evan Ben-Artzi; dear sister of Barrett Lucero and loving aunt of Hayley Lucero.

She was born in San Francisco on November 20, 1949, and attended Lowell High School. She majored in French as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and with Honors and Distinction in 1970. She also completed a Master's of Arts degree in French Literature at Stanford University in 1972. Patricia worked both as a teacher and a tutor in her early career in the San Francisco Bay Area. In the past two decades, she worked as a copy editor for several catalogue firms and other organizations.

Patricia was a third generation San Franciscan and a lifelong member and active leader at Congregation Beth Sholom, where she served on the board as both Secretary and Vice President. She also served on the Lowell High School Alumni Association Board, and contributed to many other community organizations. An avid Francophile, she continued to study French at the Alliance Fran‡aise and in private classes throughout her life. Her life's passion was speaking and translating the French language as well as traveling to France. Other interests included reading, knitting, and needlepointing, as well as spending time with her many friends in the community. Patricia was a beautiful, intelligent, and dignified woman who loved her family passionately. We will love her forever.

Not sure what to say?

October 8, 2010

I had the great pleasure of working with Pat some years ago, where the conversation always transcended the task at hand (semi-colon or colon? upper-case or lower-case?) and spilled over into French literature, Jewish philosophy, and the joys/terrors of having children. Pat's warmth, enthusiasm, diligence, and doggedness (an essential quality in a copy editor!) surrounded her very essence, and she seemed to be one of those people who would always be there. I was always meaning to check in with her, to talk about my kids, and check up on hers. I am saddened by her very premature death, and for the fact that too many years have elapsed since our last kibitz. And knowing how very devoted she was to her family, my great sympathy is for all of you; I can only begin to imagine how much all of you miss her and will continue to do so.

Gary--
Pat's parting leaves a tremendous void for you and your children---
And all of her extended family, colleagues and friends will miss her---
We will all have to fill the emptiness with remembering joy and Pat helped make allot of such memories with so many people---
Pat's life was full and she savored much, though her time seems too brief---
The last time I saw Pat we talked about the children and I am pleased I told her 'you have done a great job,' not knowing those would be my last words to her, my last chance to share a moment with her---
Pat showed you and the children how to love, work and play, remember that and may you all go forward to continue your living---

Gary, you and your family have my deepest condolences. The service yesterday was extremely moving. It was comforting and illuminating to have the various strands of Pat's exemplary life brought together that way. The loss of her feels overwhelming to me, and I can scarcely imagine how dreadful it must be to you and yours. You'll be in my thoughts as I continue to mourn her. I'll miss her greatly--her intelligence, culture, warmth, generosity, and wisdom. She was a wonderful friend and a unique person.

Pat left us far too soon, with so much more that she would have wanted to do to support the many organizations that she decided to improve with her hard work and good spirit -- and so much more we all could have learned from her example that everything worth doing is worth doing "right" (apologies to Pat for any grammar or punctuation errors and I'm sure she would catch them all).

Gary and the family, along with Pat, will be in my thoughts.

My thoughts are with Marc, Jonathan, Diana and Gary in this difficult time. I remember Pat as a very kind person. She filled the Levin home with warmth when I was regular visitor there, twenty years ago. I know she has been a good friend to my own mother recently and that she will be very missed.

I am so saddened and shocked to hear of the sudden loss of such a generous and lovely person. It was a pleasure to know Patricia. She attended Lowell with my sister and I was lucky to work with her on the Lowell Alumni Board of Directors. She was always so upbeat and giving of her time and knowledge. She will be missed by so many. My deepest sympathy goes to her family and many friends.

To Pepi's family,
I knew Pepi as a sorority sister at Alpha Epsilon Phi in Berkeley. I remember her as a bubbly, enthusiastic, and warm person. Unfortunately, I did not keep contact with her. However, nine months ago I was on flight to Maui and struck up a conversation with the woman across the aisle from me who was needlepointing what I recall was the seal of UCLA. After a few minutes of chatting, she said to my shock, " Is your name Donna?" I was so delighted to learn it was my college friend. Needless to say, we had a wonderful conversation of catching up on nearly 40 years. She was still that warm, delightful person.
Please accept our sincerest condolences.
