When Grant Powers entered a room, his presence commanded attention. He was born Lafe J. Bottorff to his loving parents, Besse and Lafe Sr. on June 5, 1924 in Merced, Ca.
He and his twin brother, Lee, graduated from Mission High School, San Francisco in 1942 where Lafe received recognition as an All City half-back. He later was inducted in the Mission High School Hall of Fame for brilliance in football.
Lafe was drafted in World War II and served in the Air Force as a tailgate gunner. While stationed in New York, he visited an ice cream parlor and noticed beautiful Bette Frost's reflection in a mirror. He and Bette soon married and moved to the Bay Area where they raised their family.
For business Lafe changed his name to Grant Powers. He was a prominent businessman with offices in San Francisco and San Jose. He often was a guest on Bay Area television talk shows.
After retirement Grant played for and sponsored a senior baseball team in Redwood City. He also produced and hosted an award-winning public access television program, Second Chance.
Grant "Lafe" Powers was a man of remarkable personality who had a great love for his family. He will be greatly missed by his sweetheart of 70 years, Bette Powers, along with their daughters: Cheryl Matsuba, Donna Cowan, Robyn Barry and (Lori) April Powers. His six grandchildren survive him: Michelle, Michael, Monica, Brooke, Eric, Laurren, Heather and Skyler. Six great-grandchildren also survive him: Daryl, Kyle, Brandon, Mark, Kristen and Chelsea. Grant was also blessed with ten great-great grandchildren.
A private service has been held.
