Annie Whitacre Obituary

Annie Whitacre
July 5, 1996 - June 6, 2017
Mountain View, CA
Annie died tragically and unexpectedly last Tuesday in the company of her family. She is the only child of Ken and Carole Whitacre with whom she lived the past three years in Mountain View, CA. Annie was born in San Francisco, CA and grew up in Los Gatos, CA where she attended Challenger Pre-School, Van Meter Elementary and Fisher Middle Schools. After graduating from Pinewood High School in Los Altos, CA she went on to study psychology at Reed College in Portland, OR for 1.5 years.
One of the highlights of Annie's childhood was her long association with Walden West Day Camp at Sanborn Park, Saratoga, CA. Here Annie, a.k.a. "Rattlesnake" (her camp name) worked with a magically imaginative and talented staff, while learning basic hiking and wilderness skills. She attended as often as possible as a camper and later went on to become a staff counselor.
At Pinewood School Annie was trained and mentored by Spencer and Shenelle Williams who developed her skills as a vocalist. She appeared regularly in stage productions at Pinewood including Whisper House, All My Sons, Sound of Music, and Les Miserables. At Reed College Annie continued her involvement with the stage, working part time for the Sound Collective setting up media equipment for campus concerts, presentations, and events. Annie played piano from an early age and resumed study this year taking lessons to develop improvisation skills.
Annie worked several part time jobs recently at Live Nation, Rhino Productions, Marriott, and Guitar Center and planned to return to school next year in the sound engineering field. Her career path followed her lifelong passion for music and the performing arts.
Services will be held at Spangler Mortuary, 799 Castro Street, Mountain View, CA Sunday July 11, 2017 at 2pm. Visitation begins at 1pm. In lieu of flowers donations to the American Cancer Society are welcome.

Dear Carole and Ken,

I was so very, very sad to learn that Annie has passed. She was a beautiful girl. She was in my freshman writing class. I remember her wit and intelligence, which made her a stand-out writer. She was wise, thoughtful, and cared about treating others kindly. She was a talented musician, too, joining the school's rock band and singing at one of our festivals. I remember thinking how beautifully she sang and how brave she was to hop on stage as a new student and just SHINE. Beautiful and brave. I was glad to know her, though briefly, and I'm very sorry for your loss.

Dear Carole and Ken,
Justin was Annie's cast mate in Whisper House. He has kept the fondest memories of the time he rehearsed and acted in the play alongside Annie. Annie was so beautiful, so talented, and so special I thought she would grow up to be a shining star. Justin and I are completely shocked and deeply saddened by her passing. Our lives were touched by her and we will never forget her.
With much love and compassion,
Justin and Ina Stangenes

We will always remember your kind and gentle soul, Annie. You had so many social causes to support, and you did it well. In your short lifetime, you brought immense joy to your peers and showed the way to live, with adventure and passion. Rest in peace, sweet lady.

Dear Carol and Ken,
We are so saddened to hear of Annie's passing. We have such fond memories of an energetic, confident, and a little wild young girl. Reid will always have his memory of your young Annie chasing him down on the playground to kiss him (quite the torture at that age) and he held onto those monkey bars till he fell and broke his arm... You brought by a book on skeletons that we still have...can't give it up. I lost my 19 yr old sister due to a tragedy also, and I know no words can help, but know she was loved and you are on our minds and in our prayers. What a beautiful girl she became.
