Somehow a conversation with older gentleman at a bar lead me to talking about Mr. DeHart and my time at MP. I stumbled on this obituary and would like to say that he was a great influence on my life. I was his Student of the Year in either 97 or 98. I wouldn't have graduated without his guidance and open door. I am thankful to him for never giving up on me and I'm sure are countless other students that were lucky enough to benefit from his guidance.

I cannot believe it´s been 13 years since coaches passing. I can honestly say not a weeks gone by that I don´t have a memory or thought of him. He was such a positive influence in my life. At a time when I needed that kick in the butt coach was there lol. But he was also a guy that you knew was invested in you. He was there when a lot of others wouldn´t be. A pat on the back from coach meant the world to me. He is thought of often and I hope his family knows how many life´s he touched. Thanks for sharing him with us.

Mr DeHart was a straight forward person who helped many students at Mount Pleasant find their ways into society. He was quiet, and respected students and in return the students respected him. He was also a fair person, as one of the troubled kids at MP, he directed me to be a good student and helped me to graduate with my class of 1990. I know this is late but he was probably the most valued staff at MP, we probably don't remember our principals, or some of our teachers, but we all remember Mr. DeHart.

Dear Heather, Chris and Linda,
I was saddened to learn of your Dad's passing. It's been a while, but to this day, I remember him clearly. He was a fine example of a husband and father, and he made an impression that stays with me to this day. One of my warmest memories was of a few toddy's and pizza (ground meet, olives and garlic, I think) on Friday nights at your house. Like it was yesterday!

Dearest Linda, Heather, Chris, Shannon, Jameson, Wendy and Tim,
How lucky he was to have all of you. How incredibly lucky we were to have him. The tremendous hole he leaves in our lives mirrors the tremendous man who he was. I know he's in Paradise with all of the Angels but I wish he was with us tonight; making his toddies, making his Fred steak and making us laugh. Lucky may not be a strong enough word to describe a friendship with Denny. We were truly blessed with his presence and now we will always be blessed with his Spirit and Love. Yes, he was the King of Happy Endings; his marriage to Linda proves that.
With Love and Hugs to you all as we approach this meaningful evening,
Linda DeHart

Dear Linda,
What an unbelievably sad shock to hear of Dennis's passing this morning at church. We were out of town the month of September and this morning Bill Alison announced the passing of tenor, "Denny." Not hearing a last name and after searching the choir loft for your Dennis and not seeing him my heart sunk in total grief.
Linda, John and I are deeply saddened by the loss of your life's companion. We could always count on seeing the two of you on Sundays with his arms wrapped around your shoulders in obvious deep devotion. Knowing he is with Jesus now is a comfort but oh will he ever be missed by all of his friends and loving family who are left behind. Our hearts are heavy and our sympathies are unending.
May you feel the comfort of our Lord's presence with you every minute as you grieve the loss of Dennis's loving presence, Linda.
Love,

To the DeHart Family,
My God Bless you in this time of great loss. Denny was my Cross Country and Track coach from 1970 to 1974 and I remember many, many great moments with this wonderful, coach, mentor and teacher. Coach DeHart was an inspriation to us all. Always tough and solid in thought and sole, he was very compassinate as well. He always cared about his students and his athletes. Never did he fail in bringing out the best in all of us and in teaching us early in life, those lessons in appreciating life and others. Coach DeHart was a true, loyal and dedicated leader. My Junior year in High School, while runing in the Varsity Championship Cross Country race at Alum Rock Park; I broke my left leg. I remember how bad I felt because I was not able to finish the race. Coach DeHart was there to lift me up with his inspiring words and laughter which made me realize that although we won the race, the League Championship as we had so many times in the past, to Coach DeHart the winning was not all that important and that he cared about his athletes more. I will always remember how he stayed with me that day and for the year that followed in my recovery to go on and compete the following year. He was a great man and I will remember him always.
With deepest wishes and prayers for his Family,

Dear Linda,
At the beginning of summer, you and I reconnected at In Spa in Almaden. How fun that was. We hadn't seen each other for 40 years. We both were yourthful neighbors at Branham Lane. I so enjoyed hearing and reminiscing about your wonderful life with Denny and your family. What devastating news to read about your sudden loss. I wish I could have seen Denny just one more time. But, reading all the wonderful notes written by everyone whose life he touched is very inspiring. Fate brought us to meet again and I want you to know that you and your family remain in my heart. Denny was one of the good guys. I am so sorry.

Mr. DeHart was the Boys Dean when I attended Mount Pleasant. Having been lucky enough to have an older brother who just graduated before I started at the school made me a legacy at MP. Mr. DeHart knew my brother well and accepted me at MP with lots of conversations and advice.
One day while riding my gas powered go cart late in the evening, I entered the MP School grounds teachers parking lot. It seemed safe because there were only a few cars in the lot. I took a few high speed passes by the front entrance and back around the teachers lot to the tennis courts. As luck would have it.... Mr. DeHart came out to see what the heck was going on and just who was terrorizing the place on a high speed machine. :) Well, it was me and since I already knew Mr. DeHart I stopped and talked to him for a while. A few min later he asked if he could take the go cart for a spin! I said Of course you can. So he carefully got into the thing as it only rode two inches off the ground. He took a few low speed laps and came back with a big smile on his face. As the four years flew by he and I had many good conversations.
I graduated In 1980, left all my teachers and good friends behind but never forgot them. Thank You Dennis for being such a good man. Very sad to hear of your passing.

Remembering coach DeHart today...I'm so thankful to have known coach DeHart. He helped instill in me the will to win, a tough work ethic, the determination, and the way he challenged you to be the BEST you could be! That’s what I remember. He was a tough guy! I loved that!
One of my favorite memories of coach DeHart was this little competition we would have occasionally after track practice. We would throw the discus back and forth on the football field trying to push the other into the opposite end zone. I never did beat coach but it showed me that even though you where working, it seemed like you where playing. Very gifted Man!
Thank You coach, you were a BLESSING to me!
My condolences go out to the entire DeHart Family.

Dear Linda,Chris & Heather,
As many have stated,it's difficult to put into words our sadness & sorrow with Denny's passing.
In the course of one's life, you meet just a few people who impact your life in a positive way,Denny was one of those few for me.I will forever miss him.
One memory I will always cherish, was made early one morning on Silver lake,as your family was spending time there, some many years ago.
As Denny & I slowly trolled that morning, nearby a large trout broke the silence as it leaped skyward, creating quite a splash. The look in Denny's face, the laugh, and his excitement, over that moment in time has always stayed with me.
We never came close to hooking that fish. But as the years passed, from time to time Denny would ask me,"hey do you remember that big trout on Silver lake?",yes I do brother.I remember the smile, the laughter, and the wonderful friendship.

Dear DeHart Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We are so sorry for your loss. Dennis was a wonderful neighbor, kind and gentle, always willing to help, always there to fix the kids bike and offer advice. I met Dennis the first time 9 years ago when my then 2-year old and myself had locked ourselves out of the house. Another dear neighbor GrandMa Shirl recommended that we turn to Dennis for help. Dennis came and rescued us, without any fuzz!! He calmly analyzed the situation and solved the problem. We were able to get back into the house and run our errands without missing a beat!
Dennis will be terribly missed!

Coach DeHart, you were my first high school football coach who had faith and confidence in my athletic ability. I played QB and you spent time with me before and after practice and made me the best that I could be. I was not tall but it did not matter to you. You told me "your my QB...so "let's get to work!" I still install some of your wisdom and persona with my players who I have coached. Coach, I will never forget you and THANK YOU for your "faith and confidence." God Bless, Art Gutierrez (1970)

Denny DeHart was a tremendous inspiration to me and my team in the years that I coached water polo at Mt. Pleasant. He would typically be lifting weights when my team was in the weightroom before school. As one person already said, he was “Stud”. As the boy’s dean at the time, I felt he kept a special eye out for our players and made sure that they stayed on track in school. Dennis had a tremendous impact on the lives of countless students who were fortunate enough to have him as a coach and mentor. Thank you Dennis for being the special person that you were!

In memory of a great coach. I was fortunate enough to have the coach for a few of my P.E.classes at MP. I was very small for my age and very shy. I will never forget how one day he approached me and encouraged me to go out for track (pole vault). Although that never happened (too scared) the fact that the "great" coach DeHart spent some time with me is something I always will remember. I am so glad to hear that he accepted Christ (as I did after high school). I look forward to seeing him again someday and thanking him for being such a great role model and friend to all. What a Man !!! May God richly bless his family and give them the comfort needed at this time.

Coach DeHart was dedicated and an inspirational coach. The competitive races are over, yet our friendship lasted many years after my high school graduation from MP. He united us athletes on the athletic fieId, and our bond still continues. I am proud to say I knew Coach and I am grateful for what he instilled in us runners. He taught us that we couldn't easily achieve anything without working hard for it. Thanks Coach

Imagine a safe environment where you could develop, and instantly benefit from the skills taught you. Core leadership principles like: integrity, commitment, teamwork, focus, humility, and strategic training. That was what Dennis “Coach” DeHart made available to all of us at MPHS.
Coach inspired me to put into practice, a strategy as old as time memorial: “Work your strengths against the opponent’s weaknesses”. For 30 years as a business owner, that advice has served me well in the competitive world of business.
Thank you for everything Coach Dennis DeHart. You will be missed.

Dear Linda,
I was deeply saddened to learn of Denny's passing. The last time I saw you two, I was struck by how young he still looked, and by the glow of youthful love that radiated from you as a couple. It was probably about a year ago; you had come to support my art "career" at some local event, and Denny announced himself by saying "I've come to buy some art!" I don't remember him ever making a quiet entry.
Though he mellowed a good deal, he remained pretty much the same guy with whom I shared some glorious years in the fraternity at San Jose State. At that time, though he was a couple years younger than I, I looked up to him as a big brother, more grounded and mature than I.
If I were to try to attach one word to my memories of Denny, that word would probably be "big". Of course I was impressed by (and envied) his well toned, athletic body, but I will also always remember him as being a big presence at any event, his ready laugh setting the tone.
Denny did not tiptoe through life. He lived it fully and with gusto. I imagine him now charging down some rocky trail on his mountain bike.
I will miss him.

Dennis,
Teaching and coaching with you at Mt. Pleasant H.S. from 1965-1969 seems so long ago and, of course, it is. However, even though we spent time together only a handful of times over the last four decades, you were always viewed as a great teacher and coach as well as a friend. I feel so fortunate that my wife and I were able to to spend a few hours with you and Linda over dinner this last May. Since, I've often thought about a chance to do some mountain biking with you either in your area or mine. You have always had so much to offer and I truly looked forward to the challenge of keeping pace while soaking in tips about navigating mountain trails. I knew you as a young stud. The only thing to change over the years was the word "young". Now that you are no longer available to admire, your memory will have to suffice. I will tap into it and your infectuous smile, often.
Linda, the many friends the two of you had together are now focused on you. You will not lack in support.

Coach DeHart was my football coach. He was a tough coach, firm, but fair with a heart of gold. He taught me many lessons on the field such as being a team player, playing smart and with heart. He taught me lessons off the field as well. He taught me how to be a good man, a good father, and a good husband. He taught me about respect, responsiblility and having good work ethics. He was a great role model in my life and in the lives of many others as well. I am who I am today due in large part to Coach DeHart. I remember him telling me he was part of the National Guard and I always assumed that's where he got his sense of discipline from. He took great care of his body, and he was a great athlete. To some it up, the man was just a STUD!
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family whom he loved so much.

When I think of Dennis at Mt. Pleasant, I think of a quiet, forceful presence…an obviously great athlete, a calm exterior presence but one who was very passionate within…he could be demanding of those he taught and coached but only because he was committed to bringing out the best from those under his tutelage.
In recent years as an occasional part of the “Hofbrau lunch bunch”(ROMEO's,which is short for," Retired Old Men Eating Out") , I observed the same attributes whether it was his political views with which I sometimes disagreed or his tales of fishing trips….always a person whom I respected because he obviously was as motivated in his retirement years as he was when he was a teacher, coach and school administrator…
My thoughts and prayers are with Dennis' family.

RIP Coach,
Living in South Carolina has its drawbacks. One of which is that I can’t attend the final services for a great man. Coach Dehart helped change my life, and I passed on many a lesson learned from him and coach K to my own children and grandchildren. Every time I hear the song, “Everything is Beautiful” (coach K used it in the slideshow the year I earned my varsity block) it reminds me of those days when I was allowed to participate in Cross Country even though I never came close to winning a race. Every time I think about those days I remember Coach D, and Coach K. at the Belmont Invitational threatening to beat my @## if I let the guy behind me, beat me to the finish. He was in last place I was in next to last. It took me many years to understand why he even cared about the guy in next to last place. I figured it out one day – he cared about me, and not about the race. I am a better man because he lived. Larry Wilson and I were best friends, and together the day he died in the gym – Coach D. got me through that and kept us all focused in a time of tragedy. I never got a chance to thank him – but I will pray for his family and all those whose lives he changed.

In fond memory of a wonderful Coach and Teacher. I had the pleasure of having Coach DeHart for PE, as well as interviewing him for the high school newspaper several on many occasions.
