Eugene Ellsworth Olich
June 6, 1925 - October 2, 2013
Resident of Aptos, California
Eugene Ellsworth Olich, aged 88, died October 2, 2013 in Aptos, CA where he had made his home since 1976.
The third of 13 children, he was born June 6, 1925 to Leslie and Clara Olich in Moorhead, MN. After his WW II service in the US Army Air Corp, he entered the Catholic University in Washington, DC where he earned his Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering while working on the Capital police force. After graduation, he was hired by General Electric to join its new Creative Engineering program in Schenectady, NY. In 1956, the GE Nuclear Energy division moved him and his growing family to San Jose, CA where he earned 10 patents for his inventions in cooling pump technology. He retired in 1988.
His post-WW II service years found him piloting his cherished single-engine Mooney, sailing his favorite Galetea, and building-by-hand his dream home on property that inspired his favorite phrase "Just another day in Paradise".
Eugene is survived by his sons Michael, Portland OR; James (with two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren), Pollack Pines, CA; and daughters Mary (with three grandchildren), Aptos, CA; Karen (now deceased, with two grandchildren); and Margaret (with two grandchildren), Plymouth, MN.
A memorial service is planned for late December in Aptos, CA.
