Eugene Robert Johnsen

Resident of San Mateo

Passed quietly on Dec. 1, 2010. Bob was born on May 28, 1924 in Chicago Il. As a young man he earned the Eagle Scout award in Tucson Az. Bob served in the Army during World War II where he was the recipient of several prestigious medals including Purple Heart, Silver Star, Bronze Star, and the Asian Pacific Service Medal. As a member of the 96th Infantry Division, he participated in the initial landing at Leyte and Okinawa.

After the war, he returned to Tucson, where he graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in mining engineering. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta. His professional career started outside of Julian CA, where he managed a gypsum mine. He then traveled the world with a successful career in air pollution, and mining equipment. For the past 30 years, Bob resided in San Francisco, Hillsborough and San Mateo. He owned Calif. Plating in San Carlos from 1984 -2005.

Bob enjoyed many years of tennis, skiing, hiking and bicycling. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling, volunteering at The San Mateo Library and Filoli, as well as cooking and entertaining with friends.

Bob was passionate about his love for animals. He was known for his optimistic management style, his "can do attitude" and his extreme love and dedication for his country.

Bob is survived by Jeanne Underwood, who Bob always said was the love of his life; Tom Johnsen, brother, and his wife Ardith; a neice, Dr. Suzanne Johnsen; a nephew, Paul Johnsen and his two beloved cats Tom and Jerry. A private memorial will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Bob are welcome at the Pensinsula Humane Society in San Mateo and Pets in Need in Redwood City. Crippen & Flynn
