Gene Howard, 88, passed away with family by his side. He was born in San Jose and spent most of his life in San Mateo. He was a Merchant Marine during World War II and later a roofer for Izmirian Roofing. At the time of his death, he was the longest surviving member of the Roofers and Waterproofers Union Local 40 with 63 years of continued membership. At one time, he was a very involved member of AFSCME Local 829, Council 57 from a 15-year employment at Canada College. Until recently, he worked a few mornings in the yard at Ace Roofing Co. He loved fishing, gardening, the Oakland Raiders, and the A's.

Gene is survived by three children, Sharon Alvarado, Charles Howard, and Susan Moon along with ten grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Ellen, and two sons, Clarence and Ronald Perry.

A memorial service will be held at 1 pm at Sneider & Sullivan & O'Connell's Funeral Home, 977 So. El Camino Real in San Mateo on Saturday, Oct 9, 2010. Donations may be made to your favorite charity. SNEIDER & SULLIVAN &
