George Bradford Obituary
George H. Bradford Resident of San Jose Born in San Jose July 20th 1923, passed away Nov. 18th 2012. 89 yrs. of good life, including his love of family, friends and golf. George enlisted in the Army during WWII and not long after his discharge he joined the San Jose Fire Department. He quickly ascended through the ranks and was one of the youngest to be made a Captain. One of his biggest thrills was when he took delivery of the departments first new Snorkel Fire Truck with a turn table. George worked hard on and off the job. He was a big supporter of the Fireman's Ball and the Firemen's Rodeo, volunteering his time to ensure these fund raising benefits were resounding successes. He raised a family with his wife Patty, who predeceased him, which include George, also a retired Fire Captain, and twin daughters, Carol and Cathy. His later years in the dept. were spent in the fire bureau working as a Battalion Chief. He faithfully served the San Jose Fire Department from May 5th 1945 to Aug. 7th 1982. When George retired with 37 years of dedicated service, he was the youngest man to retire as a Captain and with the most years of service. After retiring, he met his second wife, Evelyn, who was an avid golfer. George enthusiastically took up the game, and even became a perfectionist at repairing damaged golf clubs. He and Evelyn made many friends on the golf course and liked to entertain with card games in their home on weekends. Mr. Bradford is survived by his wife of 22 years, Evelyn, and her children Nancy Tolin and Donna Schulz. He is also survived by his three children, George W. Bradford, Carol King and Cathy Chalmer, five grandchildren, Jennifer, Christine, Christopher, Ben & Jenny and three great grandchildren, Vanessa, Dillion & Tyler. George's wish was not to have a funeral or memorial service. Donations may be made to the San Jose Fire Museum, 1661 Senter Road, Bldg. D1, San Jose, CA 95112-2522.
