Howard Ashton Baker
April 13, 1931 - April 5, 2014
Resident of San Jose
Howard Ashton Baker, age 82, passed away April 5th after a sudden collapse a week before.
Howard was born April 13, 1931in Fullerton, California to Howard A. Baker and Maria Louise (Ashton) Baker. As a young boy he spent two years in Saudi Arabia with his family, arriving there by ocean liner. Howard visited many ports of call around the world and saw the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Roman Coliseum, Pompeii, China and India, to name a few.
At the age of 13, his family moved to downtown San Jose, CA and purchased a large home which they turned into a SJSU student boarding house. There, Howard worked to maintain the property while his father was away working in the oil fields. Howard attended Roosevelt Jr. High and San Jose High School. He also belonged to the Youth Group at First Baptist Church, which was then downtown.
After high school Howard began working for Addressograph Multigraph and later transferred to National Semiconductor. Howard was also a skilled machinist and a lifelong tinkerer who was able to fix anything.
As a young man Howard enjoyed cars, boating, waterskiing, and church activities, as well as spending time with his family and friends.
In 1955 he married Evelyn Louise Bigalow and they had two children, Dorian and David. The family then moved to Southern California where they resided for almost 30 years and were joined by Howard's young nephews, John Arthur and Daniel Arthur.
After moving back to San Jose, in 1984 Howard married Geneva (Chamberlain) Quickert, whom he had known at church as a boy. They resided in Saratoga for over 30 years.
Howard was a loving husband, a devoted father, a caring uncle, an awesome grandfather and a valued friend.
Howard is survived by his loving wife Geneva and his daughter Dorian Baker; stepchildren Stephen (Sandy) Quickert, Paul Quickert, and Cheryl Barnes; nephews Joseph (Milly) Arthur, Daniel Arthur and Steve (Hui) Heindel; grandchildren Aaron, Nicholas, Sampson (Peanut), Jacoby, Erica, Karl, Mindy, Jacob, Amy, Matthew, Mikaila, Shauna, Russell, Vanessa and Fallun; and at least 15 great-grandchildren the last time we counted.
Howard is preceded in death by his parents, his loving sister Dorian Shirley (Baker) Arthur, his son David Howard Baker, his nephews John Charles Arthur and William Howard Arthur, and his stepson Stanley Karl Quickert.
Howard will be laid to rest at Madronia Cemetery, Saratoga CA. Memorial Service at Saratoga Federated Church, Saturday April 12th at 2pm.
