Ivan (Ike) Andes
Resident of San Jose
June 29, 1919 - Jan. 27, 2012
Passed away peacefully in his home. Born in Akron, Ohio to parents Aloysius Peter and Louisa Catherine Andes. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret Louise Andes, daughter Barbara Abernathy and sons Larry and Joe Andes. He was predeceased by his other daughter, Arlene Bova.
He attended North Western College in 1941 where he completed the "90 day wonder" course and became a Navy ensign just before the start of WWII. Ike served on the USS Saratoga and the history making USS Hornet aircraft carrier, CV12, which was the center of extensive action in the Pacific during WWII. Ike and his fellow crewmen received the Presidential Unit Citation during this period. He was the officer on deck during a powerful typhoon in which 80 foot waves lifted and then folded the end of the flight deck. The exciting narrative of that event can be viewed in Ike's log from that watch and is displayed in the popular Aircraft Carrier Hornet Museum, in Alameda, CA.
At the end of WWII he went to work for IBM in the Office products division where he worked until he retired after 38 years. His IBM career was briefly interrupted when he was recalled to active duty by the Navy during the Korean War and stationed in San Francisco. Returning to work at IBM after this war, Ike and his family lived in San Mateo, Sacramento, Portland, OR and finally, San Jose.
Ike and his family enjoyed several cross-country trips back to Ohio to visit other family members and toured many national parks and monuments along the way. In later years he and his wife traveled to foreign countries and the Hawaiian Islands. He was an avid reader and enjoyed playing bridge and bowling with his friends.
Ike was a kind, loving and caring man who will be deeply missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends.
