John Merrill Obituary

John Francis Merrill

Resident of Saratoga

Born October 3rd, 1936 and died October 3rd, 2010

John was born in Detroit Michigan to Francis G. Merrill and Mary L. Miller. He graduated from Tri State College in Indiana. He worked for IBM for the next 23 years designing test equipment for computers. While there he had five patents and achieved the Outstanding Invention Award in 1970. During that same year he met and married Barbara Kugelmann of New York City. They moved from Poughkeepsie, New York to Saratoga in 1973.

Shortly after they moved, John left IBM and joined Amdahl Corporation where he held three more patents. He was an avid and ranked chess player establishing a chess club at Amdahl which lasted for many years. He and Barbara enjoyed theatre, hiking, and spending time with their many friends. John developed Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease about ten years ago and spent the last year at Mission Villa in Campbell, CA where the staff and Hospice of the Valley gave him all the love, care, and compassion he required. He is survived by his wife Barbara and cousins James Blake Skinner, Vicki Skinner, and William Skinner.

There was hardly a more pleasant man to work with. Many a message flew over the wires between FAN and JFM. I'm glad to hear he had good care in those last difficult years. Goodbye, John.
