I was just thinking of Jonne and his cheesesteaks and looked him up online and found the sad news.
I first met Jonne in Mt. View over 20 years ago when I worked next door to his "sandmich" shop. How I didn't weigh 300 lbs. I'll never know. I hadn't seen Jonne since that store closed and I moved to Oregon until I just had to see his smiling face and satisfy my craving for a cheesesteak (still the best I ever had) early in 2010. So glad I did.

I meet Calvin years ago and he was a nice man. He would come in to the shop and buy produce from us and would always bring me a goodie from the state he loved so much. God bless him

I always called him Calvin even though I knew it wasn't his real name, but I think he liked it. Jonne was one of the most luminous people I have ever met. I never knew anyone who worked so hard but would still go out of his way to make everyone's day brighter.

Jonne's passing is a big loss to a world where it's more and more difficult to find a sense of community. I used to tell Jonne that he reminded me of a character on Sesame Street. I know The Alameda will never be quite the same for me now. I can't help fixating on the fact the world is a dimmer place today than before Jonne's passing. But perhaps if the rest of us can pick up some slack for Jonne and make someone else's day brighter.

Calvin was one the first to believe in my startup san jose business and I deeply appreciated all he did to help me get started. I was looking forward to the day that we could share more success together. Calvin was truly a one of a kind human being; a live-wire with more energy as a 70 year old than I had has an 18 year old. It is tragic to hear he has passed but I know he is in a peaceful place. Rest in Peace Jonne. My heart goes out to his family, he will certainly be missed in the San Jose community. Best Regards,
Eric

The legacy of his hard work and his dedication to his craft will live in my heart forever. He was a genuine man with true spirit. What I will remember most is the ease with which he shared his passion. He was a mentor and beacon of light for me to pursue and perservere regardless of the circumstances I might find myself facing.

Thank you for sharing your life with so many, we are honored and grateful for having known you. God Speed and let us know how he likes those Philly's!

I remember Calvin's Cheese Steaks back from the early 90's...and then he moved to Santa Clara and then closed his doors. One day I was driving up the Alameda, or reading the paper, and saw that he was reopening Calvins. I drove by EVERY DAY waiting for the OPEN sign and it was a few months, but I waited patiently.

I always enjoyed going to Calvin's. Jonne was always smiling and I would bring new patrons whenever I could, bragging that this place had the BEST CHEESE STEAKS around!

Today, I opened an email announcing his passing and I'm truly going to miss seeing him at his eatery. My condolences to the family and friends of Jonne. He had a smile that lit up the room and a sense of humor that compared to none.

My condolences,

This is one of the most unique and wonderful business man I'd ever met. I never forgot the first time I ordered at his Mt View restaurant, in the 80's. Ever since then, I'd bump into Jonne everywhere in San Jose. Many yrs had passed, and I met him working for My Secret, a consignment shop in Willow Glen. What a wonderful man, GOD BLESS him, and his family. Because his started this legacy, his family will endure, and keep his spirit alive. Love to you all, and thanks for bringing the best of the East to the West w/that "killer" Cheese Steak Hoagie. You truly don't forget your experience eating your first hoagie, and how many hearts he touched! Can't wait to eat there again soon!

I was stunned to hear the news - Jonne was so full of life that it's hard to imagine that he won't always be with us. Ever since my first visit to his original San Jose shop in 1985, Jonne and his great sandwiches have had a special place in my heart. All my best wishes to his family in these difficult times

Our prayers and condolences go out to Jonne's family and loved ones. We will miss seeing his smiling face as we walked on the Alameda with our labs. He always gave our Haley girl attention and a little special treat when we had dinner on the Alameda.

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of "Calvin's" passing. While many of us know his name is not Calvin, it just kind of always came out. I was just walking through his new place a few weeks ago and he was telling me where everything was going to go and how he was going to set everything up. He even told me about a childrens coloring book he was working on.

My wife and I have gotten to know Jonne over the past few years and it is hard to imagine he will not be there to open his newest spot. We are so sorry to hear of this and our thoughts are with you.

Our deepest condolences to the family on the loss of Mr. Aleeson. He was so full of Love, we were always warmed by it on our many visits to Calvin's. The Alameda has lost a giant, but we will always remember him fondly.

What a great guy. My son and I were having lunch there last summer one Saturday and he just plopped down at our table, yelled inside for someone to send out some fries, and started chatting away. Let's hope his memory lives on with a new Calvin's.

Jonne was our regular pre-Sharks game meal, and he always gave us a side of warm conversation about his Flyers with our food.
I'm just glad to say I knew the man, and glad that I introduced so many of my friends to him, he was a San Jose, and California, and global, legend.
Rest in peace Jonne.

San Jose has lost a wonderful friend. I frequented Calvin's in college & was so excited to see his return to The Alameda. I took my teenage son to eat, and Calvin was his regular upbeat and chatty self, and said he was happy to see the next generation in his place.

Thank you for many happy, and enjoyable meals. Visiting with you was part of the experience, and we shall miss you. Peace to you and your family
