Ah Joe... You must be having such a great time in Heaven. I think you went straight up. Keep praying for your country, I suspect you are. Thank you for your peaceful, faithful, generous life. Send us signs sometime... Wake us up, help us to hope, inspire us to simplicity and faithfulness, and help us smile as we remember you. Wish I could give you a hug.

Joe:
How many times you joined us in singing Christos voskrese, Hristos anesti, Christ is Risen! May the same risen Lord fill you with His peace and joy! Christ is Risen from the dead! By death He trampled Death, and upon those in the tombs He bestowed life!

Joe, I will miss you my fiend. I just found out, my wife Gretchen discovered it. We had talked in Nov/Dec, I never knew god would call you home so soon. I really cherish all those military funerals we did together. I will never forget you. I will visit your resting place. I wish I had known, so I could have given you a military funeral. I just found out about Joe's passing today when I googled "Fr. Anthony Hernandez St. Basil 2011" to look for an address, and Joe's name came up in the top listing. Isn't that appropriate?! I would see him in so many different Roman and Byzantine Catholic events, all up and down the peninsula! He was filled with so many interesting and wonderful facts. I hope he is now marveling in awe at what “Eye has not seen, nor has ear heard, neither has it entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them that love him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9). I know that St. Joseph is taking care of him!

I just heard about Joe's passing. What a shock. My condolences to all his family for such a sudden loss. Joe was such a kind, gentle, thoughtful, faith-filled person.
Given his love of spirituality, deep conversations, and his relationship with God, the image that consoles me most is the one I have of Joe finally meeting God face-to-face. What a conversation they are having... What joy and peace.
May that peace come, in time, to us all.

I wish to offer my sympathies to Joe's family, and assure them of my prayers for Joe. It seems that Joe had a wide circuit of Church communities that he was part of! I know Joe from his visits to St. Basil the Great Byzantine Catholic Church when we were in Los Altos, then, less frequently in Los Gatos, and finally I saw him last in November at St. Albert's, Palo Alto. His knowledge and kindness were truly appreciated. Eternal Memory!

To all of Joe's friends thank you. As his cousin I knew a lot of his quirkiness and loved it about him. he was in army intelligence when he was in the reserves and used to say that was all he could say about it. In his younger years he traveled in Europe including Russia. He made several trips to Switzerland where he became good friends with our cousins there. He did a very good job of finding our very spread out family including the long lost cousins in Australia. He was good at that. Cousin Arlene

Our loss is heaven's gain, and yet the pain of Joe's passing remains. As long as the good Lord sees fit to grant me health and good memory, Joe will be remembered by name in my prayers at every Mass I attend.
When you find yourself in the Heavenly Court, my friend, intercede for me.

Our good friend passed away on the Feast of the Holy Family. I knew Joe for almost 24 years, having first met him at the St. Ann's / Stanford Young Adult Group. In those early years, we usually saw each other twice a week, at 4:30 pm Sunday masses at Stanford and every Wednesday night at the Newman Center. I'll always remember Joe as a smiling and jovial friend; committed Catholic; remarkably knowledgeable about all sorts of obscure things (especially history, religion, politics); who could be fascinating (even a bit mysterious); seemed to know almost everyone; and had an impish and ironic sense of humor (but that could sometimes get him in trouble!). In latter years, I saw Joe perhaps every few months, usually in Menlo Park, whether at Nativity, the Post Office, Library, Kinko's, walking or biking about town, etc. He always had a smile on his face, was glad to see me, asked about mutual friends, and we always had an interesting conversation. Rest in peace, pal. We'll miss you. But the next time we meet, I expect you'll have even more fascinating information to share with us!

To Joe's family,
I remember Joe as a good man of Faith, who would show up in the most surprising of places. He was kind to and concerned for others. I recall his love for good music and good liturgy. Requiescat in pace, Josephe.

To the family of Joe:
Please know I am praying for you to be comforted in the loss of such a dear, kind, interesting, and above all, faithful man, that was Joe.
His death was such a shock, and to our minds much too early, but God called him home, to his eternal reward, and Joe has the better end of it.
I will continue to pray for your soul, Joe. I hope you know that I enjoyed your friendship and you will be missed!
Requiescat in pace.

Joe, you have been a fixture of my Catholic life since before I even became one. You've been at every event I ever organized, whether it was for the Evening of Reflection at Nativity or my move to Rwanda. You even showed up to help me move out of my apartment before I went to Africa. And you were a networker and connector with the best of us... introducing me to Mary and a slice of my Mount Hermon history. Thank you for always being loving and giving and generous with your time and your concern about so many things. I am so sad that you are gone but I also rejoice that God saw fit to give you the best possible Christmas present - the 12 Days of Christmas in Heaven with Him. Pray for us down here - we need your intercession. Thank you for being a model of patience and generosity and service for all of us. We hope to do you justice at the Mass at Our Lady of Fatima.
Love,
Tom Carroll

God bless Joe and his family. The spirit of Jesus Christ within him was apparent to all who knew him. Joe is a cherished friend and great member of St Vincent de Paul parish in SF. I just enjoyed his company and hugged him at the SVdP Christmas Party and can't believe that he has passed. His love for God and fellow men and women assures me that he is in a better place in heaven. We'll miss you friend and you'll always be in our hearts, souls and minds!

May his memory be eternal!
A bright and joyful light has gone out of our world. I also will miss him at Our Lady of Fatima Byzantine Catholic Church, and the other places, Catholic and Orthodox, where we so often ran into each other.
He loved the Body of Christ and traveled amongst all of us with joy and passion and was thus a great gift to ecumenism especially amongst Catholics and Orthodox Christians.
I feel blest to have know him even these few years. My sincere condolences to his family. He and you are in my humble prayers.

To Joe Scaroni's Family:
I am sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I have known him for about 5 years or so and found him to be a good man of God. He was very active in his Catholic Faith, and one of his hobbies was his interest in the Eastern rites of the Catholic church. I have enjoyed talking to him and going places with him over the years. Me and Joe both shared the same first and middle names: Joseph Anthony and I think this helped us understand each other better. Lately I was seeing him about every month for the breakfast meeting of the CMF club. I believe God called Joe early, since He found Joe ready to go to a much better place.

To Joe's Family,
I have know Joe for at least 10 years. I was just informed today 31 December 2010 of his sudden passing. I am deeply saddened from his loss of a great friend.
Joe and I met at Our Lady of Angels Parish in Burlingame. We were part of the Young Adult group when the group existed. We always met up at any young adult group event at what ever parish.
Joe was a kind, caring, and deeply religious man whom I couldn't be happier to be associated with knowing.
Joe, thank you for the years of friendship. God called you home for a reason, early, but we know your in a much better place. I will see you soon my friend. Until then my friend have fun.
Love ya,

Joe was my favorite cousin. When he was in college he always made time to stop by and see his uncle and aunt Herb and Margaret who live not far from the UCSC campus. I remember the time I was coming home from Cabrillo and saw this scruffy looking hitchhiker and realized it was him so I stopped and picked him up. When he wasn't hitching a ride he was riding his bike. He was also the one in the family who took the time to research the family tree and for that I am eternally grateful. I will miss him very much. To Susan, John, and Nick, my thoughts go out to you and I really wish I could be there for you. The weather here prevents me and the totally booked flights do also. Know that I will be thinking of you tomorrow. When trying to find you on the net because I can't find your addresses I saw that your mom passed away last year. I'm sorry I did not know about that. Lets catch up soon. Your grieving cousin Arlene
